The Gloves Come Off -
06-01-05, 06:38AM
Sometimes being polite just isn't worth it. I tried so hard to be respectful of my coworker who was being laid off. She came into my cubicle countless times, talking about the injustice of the system and how it's not fair that they're going to keep someone based on years of service (me) vs someone who, in her mind, has more computer skills and that the supervisor likes better (her). I bit my tongue and listened. When all was said and done I brushed off her comments as someone who was lashing out and needed someone to listen. Today I went to her journal to try and get a hold of her so I could forward some mail. Her last entry and it made my blood boil. Her comments made me sound like some moron who answered phones and barely knew their ass from a hole in the ground compared to her "higher level computer skills". She also made it sound as if she was my boss' favorite and I would have been dumped if it weren't for those pesky unions and their rules.
To my ex-coworker: Knowing your way around Word and Excel better is hardly what I would consider 'higher level' computer skills. If you wanted to match my knowledge of the computer to yours, outside of pretty graphs I run circles around your skills. Making graphs is not that hard, and a simple book gave me the shortcuts you feel lifted you to a higher level. I am perfectly capable of doing your job and did most of those reports on my own before you were even hired. Outside of making reports we had many other tasks. The most important thing was to be able to multi-task. While I was able to do a month's worth of reports in a day, my half of the doctor's letters in a day and my daily tasks you struggled to keep up. Even your training had to stop on one report because you found out the information you had entered was wrong. You also forgot to do two reports for a year. I'd say that knocks your skills down a bit. I've held one job for almost 18 years now, and it's not by sitting on my thumb and spinning. I worked hard to get where I am and know this place like the back of my hand. I am not going to have someone tell me that fudging numbers and guessing on reports makes them a better employee.
I don't wish you ill will. I hope that you are able to regroup and find a job that makes you happy. In the meantime, I think you need to do some soul searching on what you really know.
