A 7-year-old boy will be attending a fire safety class after setting his homework on fire Tuesday and sparking a blaze inside an apartment, a Jackson Fire Department official said.
The child, whose name was not released, started the blaze in a bedroom at Lochwood Place Apartments at 5880 Ridgewood Road, said Deputy Fire Chief Charles Graham, the Fire Department's spokesman. "He apparently got frustrated or mischievous," Graham said. No one was injured.
Firefighters were called to Building I at 3:07 p.m. The boy was home with his 9-year-old sister when the fire started, Graham said. Graham said he did not know where the children's parents were. The fire heavily damaged the bedroom. An adjacent apartment suffered smoke damage.
"Kids home alone, that's a big problem," Graham said. "It (the fire) could have affected four to eight families real quick." Officials with the fire department's Juvenile Fire Setters Program will counsel the boy, Graham said. The boy's sister may also be asked to attend the class, officials said.
"Since we've had the program, we have not had a repeat fire setter," said Norman Presson, the fire department's chief arson investigator.
Earlier this month, one of two children home alone was blamed for starting a fire at Signature Square apartments on Hospital Drive in Jackson. That fire destroyed four units and damaged four others. No injuries were reported.
I hope they don't have a dog! How many of you remember trying to pull a stunt to get out of something? Hiding vegetables in your napkin or pocket? The old thermometer under the light bulb?
My claim to fame was starting a fire with my lamp from trying to dry barbi's clothes by placing them on the bulb.
