View Full Version : Decent, Indecent, Who's to Say?

The U.S. television and radio industries are about to come under renewed attack over sex, violence and profanity in their programming, both in Congress and at the Federal Communications Commission.
.
Leading lawmakers and the commission's new chairman have proposed a broad expansion of indecency rules, which were significantly toughened just last year. They are also looking for significant increases in the size of fines and new procedures that could jeopardize the licenses of stations that repeatedly violate the rules.

Here we go again. I'm almost positive that this is going to result in a massive rift between those pining for more conservative media and those who could give a shit less and are happy with the way things were before Janet Jackson's titty came leaping out of her dress with nothing to fear.

What do you think?

I think that if you dont want to watch something you have the power in the palm of your hand to change the channel. It is called the remote. There is a Channel up, channel down, and the all powerful POWER button. If you find something offencive, feel free to press any one of those 3. Having the government do it for you is rather excessive.

Spot on, Jake - it looks like atman's Armageddon Theory is coming true: the Republicans acted like they had a massive mandate in 2000 after a very dubious election, and now Bush has won by a less dubious but still unimpressive 3% they're acting as if they've won a landslide. Their arrogance and disdain for political reality is going to come back to haunt them in a few years. The same thing happened to Mrs Thatcher: just after the show of hubris came the fall, and ultimately the Tories had very little to show for it. The Democrats must be whooping it up at the prospect of uniting the majority of Americans against these proposals - and under their own banner.

That requires leadership and common sense. Both are rather... lacking in democratic party. With the latter being lacking throughout the country in general. Majority seems to like the idea of government holding their hand.

On economic issues, maybe, but socially most of the Reagan Democrats went south long ago - I'd be very surprised if Howard Dean can't use his populist skills to connect potential Democrat voters better than they have in the past. In the end, though, it doesn't take a genius to win an election when the Republicans are busy alienating everyone: they didn't secure re-election in November by filling everyone with confidence about their ability to manage the economy, which is famously a DNC asset, they did it by convincing swing voters that the Democrats were crazy elitists who wanted to marry everyone's firstborn son to the bloke out of the Scissor Sisters. This is their only asset, and they've just jettisoned it. Who looks crazier now?

Whats worse is this bill is looking to throw FCC regs on pay channels, like my beloved HBO.

Better not touch my Deadwood or Sopranos...shit, better keep their hands off of Taxicab Confessions too...people don't have to watch them if they are offended. It's just like strip clubs for example. If you don't want to see titties and skin, go to the zoo. Can't promise you won't see poo-flinging or animals getting it on, but damn, it's life. Get over it. And if you're afraid your kids are gonna see something they shouldn't, then it's your fault. If you'd been supervising and PARENTING your kids, it wouldn't be a problem.

HBO they can sensor all they want. You have to be completely burnt out on weed, with a dose of PCP to watch THAT stuff. :p

I'm crushed, Pos. Surely you find "Deadwood" somewhat entertaining? If not, dude, sorry.

Fucking cocksucker.... HAHAHAHAHA I love it for some reason, maybe because it is so vulgar...and half because I like Calamity Jane. She's so drunk and you never know what's gonna come out of her mouth.

Is it just me, or was Al Swearengen passing his Gallstone the absolute WORST thing I have ever seen on television? I swear I nearly passed out from the sympathy pains.....

Also of note, Carnivale's season finale....I'm still here begging for more....too bad I have to wait a year or more to get my fill.

The finale was the first episode I've ever seen of Carnivale (I don't personally have HBO, we just got satellite at my house a couple of months ago and my parents didn't splurge on any extra movie channels :() but it was different. I kinda want to see what happens next season. But yeah, Swearengen's stone was awful. I just really wonder what is going on with Trixie, she's in a much bitchier mood than usual. She's trying to go for the record for the number of "fuck"'s in one fucking scene. lol I knew Al wouldn't die this soon though, that he'd have to pass the stone. I just wonder...how did they make it look so real?

Sometimes I think JakeD is going to jump out and strangle me for yapping about HBO so much. However, I won't stop until everyone is a convert. Well, everyone cept Pos, he has no time for something without titties.
