View Full Version : So... That Was A Waste of Time

Seriously... they should have renamed the meeting "Pep Rally" and had us bring pom poms. The head of UCLA, who is a really nice guy, talked about the future of our hospital and the reason he is restructuring our department and moving half of it (our half). The question on everybody's mind was the layoffs. He said that 150 positions had already been taken (60 by layoff, the rest through people retiring, etc...) and that there would be more layoffs to reach their goal of 400 positions. They would be laying off the first week of April and the first week of May. Then he said that not all of us would be moving, meaning we should brace ourselves for layoffs in our department. He might as well have ended the speach with that, because everyone was too busy freaking out to even listen about his goals and ideals.

I hate that they basically know who is going to be laid off, and yet are waiting to do it. Granted, the money from working the 2 months is a good thing, but I hate this waiting game. Sure, I've been with UCLA for 17 years... but I don't know where I stand with other people in the department. It's fucked no matter how you look at it.

Question, Diva: how many managers are getting sacked?

My previous software company had several rounds of layoffs. First round was based on salary (too high? you're gone) I think, and the second was based on departmental need. The third (mine) was based on seniority. Everyone else in engineering had been there longer than I had.
Funny thing was, the day I was laid off, I called in sick because I overslept. Well, my boss called me and said that she couldn't grant my time off request, because I needed to attend a "series of meetings." The rest is history and I got the whole summer off which was pretty cool. I must say that in Boston, summer is definitely the best time to get laid (off).

Exactly.... From what I understand they actually promoted my boss. They have laid off a couple of managers, but not many. Here's the ironic part. The head of our department left for another hospital. They decided not to fill her position, but didn't count it as one of the positions to remove. She was making a large salary, and it would have been a good dent.

Sickeningly predictable, isn't it? It doesn't take a genius to work out that fewer employees require fewer managers, but then, logic really has very little to do with public and private corporations. I actually have less time for the touchy-feely, synthetically sympathetic hierarchy that the Clinton and Blair years have produced than I did with the openly indifferent people we had before them: the fact is that they all hate the unions, hide behind their staff, and always make sure that the women and children are always first to the lifeboats - first after them, that is. Ours don't even know what we do. I'm so bored with their incompetence and inability to do anything other than cut hours and augment paperwork that I now amuse myself by rewording minutes as embarrassingly as possible.

UCLA is known for it's heavy middle management. I think the term 'middle management' means "people who do the scheduling and get thrown to the wolves when someone in upper management fucks up". Meanwhile the upper management keeps busy by have 'power meetings' and finding ways to spend money like it's water.

A couple of years ago we all had to go to customer service classes for 6 weeks. The idea was that if you repeat something 6 times it sticks in your head. It cost millions of dollars. The result? I get a diploma that says I passed the course and the people who were complete assholes before went back to being complete assholes.

Adsum, Diva, we've all been there. My political views used to be quite middling, centre-left but not markedly so. I think what has sent me veering further and further towards socialism-red-in-tooth-and-claw over the last few years isn't particularly what I've read - like most people, it's been my experience of management.
