(CNN) -- Beaches were open Sunday just hours after a 10-year-old boy died from injuries suffered when a shark attacked him in water 4 feet deep Saturday evening.

David Peltier of Richmond was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters at 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

The attack severed the main artery in his left thigh and resulted in significant blood loss, a hospital spokesman said.

On Sunday, officials decided to keep the beaches open after a police helicopter spotted no sharks along the shore.

"Since there were no sightings of a shark and since this is an extremely, extremely rare occurrence ... we decided it was safe and reasonable to open the beaches," said Chuck Appleback, director of Emergency Medical Services. {News (http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/02/shark.attack/)}

A ten year old boy is killed and no shark is caught... and they re-open the beach?!?!?!?! They should have kept it closed, at least for the day. What do you think?

The least they should have done is close it out of respect for that poor father. Imagine how horrible he must be feeling. And then to learn they opened it up for more possible attacks.

well once there was no shark in the area anymore why close the beach? At least they didnt do as they do here and go out and kill every fish for miles around just incase so thats a bonus. I really cant see any point to a closure for no reason that would be a little unreasonable

They didn't see the shark before the attack either. You're a fishman, aussie. Do you know the habits of sharks? Do they come into a territory and then leave? Does anyone know? I'm curious.
