Blockbuster, the world's largest video rental company, has said it will not back down from its hostile takeover bid for rival Hollywood Entertainment. Its comments came after US antitrust enforcers said Blockbuster had provided "insufficient and inaccurate" details about its plans for the takeover.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has now filed a court motion to halt the bid, until it gets more information.
Blockbuster said it would be happy to provide the FTC with fresh details.
Rival bid
Meanwhile, Hollywood, the number two video rental company, has agreed to be bought by the number three - Movie Gallery.
The FTC has already agreed this deal, which Blockbuster is now trying to thwart.
Under US law the FTC has 30 days to conduct an investigation of Blockbuster's interest in Hollywood.
The agency said that due to a "programming error", more than half the data in Blockbuster's submission was inaccurate, and it was now seeking more time to study the case.
I fucking loathe Blockbuster even more now. This whole "No late fees" shit is annoying as hell. They never had what I wanted in store since no one had to return shit when its due, so I cancelled my membership. Now I goto Hollywood, a far superior animal.
I've never heard of Movie Gallery, but as long as they have late fees and rotating stocks of movies, I dont mind.
However with Blockbuster taking over, I would have no choice in rental options. Its like every beer becoming Budweiser and thats it. BLAH!
I sincerely hope the FTC does its job and blocks any move by those fucking guys. And I also hope the Attorney Generals office sues the piss out of Blockbuster for lying about the No Late Fees shit.
In reality if a movie is a week past due, you have to pay a 1.25 restocking fee. More then a month late you own the movie, they refuse to take it back, and bill you.
Last I heard 35 some states were sueing them, but we all know how long thats going to take.
So here is to you Blockbuster Video
