ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

The man, the legend, the patron saint of Gonzo Journalism himself died by his own hand tonight.

He was one of my main idols as far as writing was concerned...his rapier wit, knack for expression, and undying dedication to reporting the truth as he saw fit was an inspiration to me. I bought almost all of his books, lent them out to friends, did my damnedest to make sure that his talent was acknowledged by as many new readers as possible.

RIP, Hunter. This one's for you.

"As you were, I was. As I am, you will be." - Hunter S. Thompson

I saw the reports. He brought a lot of insights to a LOT of people.

Sad. :(

This is very sad. "Fear and Loathing" is one of my favorite books. :(

It's a tragedy that we will never recover from. The literati of this world are getting thinner and for such an icon to be memories is saddening.

I know nothing of him but his name. I'm going to have to read a book or two.
