A female member of a US National Guard military police unit was demoted for indecent exposure after a mud-wrestling party at the Army-run Camp Bucca detention centre in Iraq, a military spokesman said.

The party occurred on October 30th, as the 160th Military Police Battalion, an Army Reserve Unit from Tallahassee, Florida, prepared to turn over its duties to the Asheville-based 105th Military Police Battalion, said Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, spokesman for detainee operations at Camp Bucca.

In the course of the transfer of duties, "some individuals in their exuberance decided to put together a mud-wrestling thing," Johnson said by telephone.

"There were females involved, and some members of the 105th also became involved, one female soldier in particular."

Following an inquiry, that soldier was demoted and placed on restriction for participating in the event, specifically for indecent exposure, he said.

Four or five other members of the 105th who were spectators received counselling, Johnson said.

However, she was identified by the Daily News as Deanna Allen, 19, and the New York newspaper's identification was confirmed by her mother, Ladyna Waldrop of Black Mountain.

Allen was demoted from specialist to private first class. She is still a guard at the camp, the newspaper reported.

The Daily News said it was given 30 of the party photos, and it printed several in Sunday's editions.

Waldrop said her daughter is devastated by the events.

"It was just a thing where she was coerced by a bunch of people, and with all the excitement, she lost her sanity for a moment and that's all it took," she said.

"It seems like they're just singling her out.

"She's the one getting all the publicity and punishment, and that's not right."

The 105th took over Camp Bucca on November 1st, and photos of the party were found after the 160th had left Iraq, Johnson said, adding that he understood a soldier had turned over the photos to commanders.

Results of the inquiry were sent to the commander of the 160th, he said.

"It appears from the commander's inquiry that this was primarily put on by troops of the 160th, who are no longer under our command," Johnson said.

It wasn't immediately clear if any members of the 160th had been disciplined.

The party was isolated, Johnson said.

"Detainees were nowhere in the vicinity," he said.

"They had no possible way of seeing what occurred."

A scandal involving the separate Abu Ghraib prison erupted last spring when photographs were made public showing soldiers taunting naked Iraqi prisoners.

Waldrop said she communicates with her daughter almost every day via internet instant messaging, and they also see each other by means of a web camera.

"She's very tearful, very upset," Waldrop said.

Waldrop said she was proud of her daughter for joining the National Guard.

"But I hate that this happened, and so does she," she said.

The party "just got way out of hand, and before you know it, pictures were taken, and she didn't have time to react.

"My mom and I have both had talks with her that she's supposed to be an example for her country."

Is this really such a big deal? If the worst thing she did was show her tits to someone, is that really worth being demoted. She was among fellow soldiers, who were all engaging in the same activities, not out in public flashing anyone and everyone. She was no where near detainees, nor could she have been spotted by civilians. I just don't see where she, or anyone else who was there, did anything wrong.

It's no big deal at all. The really big news this weekend is much closer to home: the American guards at Guantanamo Bay apparently hired a prostitute to menstruate over an inmate (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1328924/posts). Liberty is a shining light.

Am- it's not just Americans doing this- didn't I read last week about English guards doing the same thing to their Iraqi prisoners that the Americans did? (Sexual torture) And just because a few Americans did assinine disgusting things doesn't make us all like that- any more than the english man that molested me as a little kid makes all englishmen child molesters & perverts. :raisebrow

Bass: where did I say that it means that all Americans are like that? Answer: I didn't.

But in answer to your substantive point, the difference is simple: if Tony Blair stood up on a podium and said that he was on a mission to civilize the Middle East and export British values to the world (and don't think for a moment he wouldn't like to try), he would be laughed out of office. The defensiveness, shiftiness and legerdemain of the British Government vis-a-vis Iraq is the greatest back-handed compliment it could pay the general public. In contrast all George W Bush has to do is go on national television, tell everyone that John Kerry speaks French and then retire to count his majority. Or is that unfair? Because that is the way it appears.

I wonder where the moral outrage is at the moment, I really do. Bush is doing things that would make Nixon blush for shame, and yet the media carries on as if Howard Dean running for chairmanship of the DNC is the worst scandal of the last twenty years. Sometimes the political scene just drives me to despair.

I hear ya'. I just hope that the democratic party has something better to offer up next election. This is getting tiresome, and not just because I'm the only democrat I know.

However, as far as the young lady gettin' all likkerd up and wrastlin' in the mud, I honestly don't see how this could be a problem for anyone other than the person she's sittin' on top of.

Looks like Dean has it all wrapped up now. Expect a national deluge of "Treacherous Marxists win commanding heights of Democratic Party" for the next four years, despite Dean actually doing what the DNC should have been doing this past decade and re-connecting with working-class and middle-class voters.

Dean running the DNC is excatly what the doctor ordered.

As for Kerry not being that good enough to beat Bush, I still disagree. Kerry is the number 1 Dem Senator, and thats nothing to shake a stick at.

For all we know, with all the fraud in Ohio and Florida this time around Kerry is the president elect.

The problem with this country, and why there is no moral outrage, is simple. People in this country are led to believe the president is infallible. especially a "war" president, as Bush calls himself over and over.

Its a shame because, the second you stop questioning the leadership, its over. Leaders have to be held accountable for their actions. Clinton can get his dick sucked, and OHHHH NOOOESSSS its all going down.

Bush has killed how many people? detained how many people? Revoked how many rights? But wait, we are at war, so he can do what he wants....

He's just lucky I dont own a 36 odd 6 and live in DC, or I would take one for the team.....

Did you see the Daily Show the other week? "The clap of the damned" pretty much summed up the Democrats, Dean is exactly what they need.

I can still remember the horror - it wasn't total surprise, of course, but still seeing it line-by-line in the US media in all its awful glory really brought it all home - of seeing Dean denounced as a crazy left-winger, then going to various sites and looking at his actual platform to see just what his crazy Marxist schemes looked like.

Sure enough, I found pretty much what I feared: supports capital punishment; fiscal conservative; commitment to present levels of military expenditure; opposes federal gun control. Left-wing? Hmmm.

Am- I think I assumed that you were lumping americans together with this statement-"Liberty is a shining light." Sorry if I got it incorrect.

The rest of what you said, I agree with you on. This country's political BS gives me the creeps & the people in this country are such sheep.........

No, it's okay, Bass - that was just a sarcastic reference to Bush's inauguration speech, where he spent about fifteen minutes ladelling in every metaphor for liberty he could find.

This whole thing is obviously bullshit. There's no mud in Iraq, just sand.

As a member of the US Military I am here to tell you that is how the system works. As fucked up as it may be they are willing to screw anyone over for anything.

As someone who was screwed... I am well aware of it. Must be a special department in Pentagon
