This genius (http://www.themilwaukeechannel.com/news/4007468/detail.html) might have gotten away clean, if it wasn't for his own stupidity.

Give me one of your favorite dumb criminal stories.

If you have any funny/odd personal stories relating to friends or yourself doing stupid crap (speeding, drinking, getting ticketed) add them too.

When I was working for a Plastic Surgeon while I was in school we had a girl come in who wanted to get all kinds of things done (can't say what she had done due to HIPPA).

So this girl comes in and has a consultation, then schedules her surgery which was in the price range of $20,000. For her first payment she pays by personal check, the next time she comes in she pays with her "mothers" credit card. Because she is a large girl she can not have her surgery in office so she also uses her "mothers" credit card to pay for the hospital portion of the surgery.

Months come and go after her surgery and one night just as we are about to close I get a phone call from a woman asking who we are and why we are on her credit card statement. It turns out that the girl who had surgery with us worked for the woman and had been stealing the credit card statements when they would come in that mail. She had been fired a few days before the woman called us. The woman's credit card company called her and asked why she hadn't been paying her bill.

It also turns out that this isn't the first time the girl had pulled this kind of stunt, in fact she wasn't even allowed to work around money or have a personal checking account. She was the woman's book keeper.

Needless to say I was the only one who ever took a payment from this woman and my work left me by myself to deal with the Oakland County Sheriffs office for months on end. This is the girl http://www.state.mi.us/mdoc/asp/otis2profile.asp?mdocNumber=307898

I LOVED the episode on the program COPS where they had a report of a possible burgulary at an elderly housing apartment facility. They responded & this guy had gotten hung up on the spikes at the top of a 12 foot ornate iron fence. This guy's up there crying & begging the cops to PLEASE get him off the fence because he was in pain & had been hanging there for over 20 minutes. Guess HE couldn't claim 'mistaken identity'!

lol JakeD, they arrested her and when I went to court for it they had said she has so many years to pay it back when/if she gets out on probation.
My guess is though that she will never pay it back. The worst of it was that when she was first arrested and waiting for a court date they had her in a prison 10 miles away from my house and everynight when I went to bed all I could think was that she is going to escape from jail and come to my house to kill me.

Can't they have inmates work while they are incarcerated, earning money for the people they owe it to? I think that makes so much sense.

They do work, but they only make like 20 cents an hour or something around that.
When they get out they have to pay back the money within a certain peroid of time.

Hily - Did you ever get into trouble? For not checking ID or verifying or anything?

No I never got into any trouble. Our office policy was that people could use checks or credit cards from family members (in the business of Plastic Surgery the docs dont care where the money comes from as long as they get it). People would come in with their moms or boyfriends and they would put down payments on surgery. The doctor and the office manager almost got into trouble, but the court decided along with the credit card company that the doctor would just have to eat the cost of the surgery. Same thing with the hospital. Needless to say after that we were told to check ID's and that the person who's name was on the card had to be present when the card was being charged.

Some years back we had a huge Medi-Cal fraud bust in the hospital. We have a number to call if we think someone is not supposed to be using Medi-Cal. My friend's department got sick of seeing people dripping in gold and diamonds with Beverly Hills addresses using Medi-Cal. One day she was driving into work's parking lot and a woman cut her off in a brand new Rolls Royce. The woman got out of her car and placed a fur coat in the back seat, totally ignoring my friend. Not ten minutes later she showed up in her department. They set up a sting operation and nailed a lot of people (that woman was included) for insurance fraud. It was awesome.

Diva, is Medi-Cal anything like Medicaid? We had a lot of people come through the plastic surgery office who had Medicaid and Michigan Bridge cards (food stamp cards) and even though they had to be on state aid they some how found a way to pay for 1,000's of dollars worth of liposuction.

Hily - Good that you didn't get into trouble, then. :)

is Medi-Cal anything like Medicaid?

Yeah, MediCal's basically a state version of Medicaid...amazes me how these morons manage to squeeze benefits out of the state and the national government.

It is beyond me. It really is sad that the people who NEED it can't get it, cause the people who don't need it have it. What is even sader is our taxes pay for them to have it.

I can't remember the exact details, but I remember the one from Florida a few years ago when a robber walked into a bank with a paper bag over his head, only with the eyeholes cut awkwardly, so he could barely see anything. He then proceeded to attempt to correct it, whereupon it split open.

I used to work in a hardware shop. I wasn't there on the day in question, but some bloke apparently came in and asked for a sawn-off shotgun. He was absolutely serious, what's more.
