Thanksgiving, for those of you not living in the US & may not know, is one of the US's main traditional holidays. It was appointed so that we Americans had a day to celebrate the day in 1621 when the Pilgrims & Indians got together to feast on the pleanty that the Indians had brought (since the Pilgrims were hungry & not doing so well). At least that's how the fable goes.
The reality is quite different. It was originally a religious celebration & had nothing to do with eating or Indians. The following site takes it's info from original written accounts of the colonists: http://www.plimoth.org/learn/history/thanksgiving/thanksgiving.asp
It figures that Thanksgiving as we learned about it is totally a fable. I was originally going to say that it was a celebration of the day the Pilgrims & Indians got together & the Indians saved the Pilgrims' lives & the whites that came 150 yrs. later repaid them by murdering as many as they could, then I read the TRUE account from the above site, & realized that whoever morphed the truth into the legend actually did this country a favor in present day times. It gave us a day to sit back and think- really THINK- about what we have in our lives to be thankful for. It's a day that we are supposed to realize that there are others of different colors & beliefs & reilgions in this world that we should be tolerant and accepting of. (Although most people DON'T think about it that way- it's just a day to go stuff yourself.) It's a day where we are supposed to get together with our loved ones & remember those who are no longer there & what they meant to us, & interact with the ones that we ARE with, with acceptance & love. And if we are alone, (which I have been for SO many years- Asshole worked & I wasn't invited to his family's get togethers- but won't be for the first time this year- the kids & the babies are coming over!) it's the day we are supposed to be thankful for our friends & family that we DO have, even if they're far away from us.
So I say to you all- whether from this country or not, whatever color, religion, nationality, or sex you are- I am THANKFUL for ALL of you! THANK you for being there, to read my opinions, history, expressions of happiness, confusion, & sometimes anger & listen (or not) to my advice- I LOVE YOU ALL!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
