The Victoria Massacre

The Victoria System was on the very fringe of Republic space; it was on the border between the Ulik’Tai Confederacy and the Glactic Republic.
It had one inhabited planet; Victoria III. It was a green planet; Terran Class, which was considered habitable without aid by 90 per cent of the Republic’s members. The planet had approx. 3 billion Republic Citizens.

The fleet stationed to patrol the system consisted of three Alliance-Class Frigates; the Gettysburg, Ontario, and the New England. Each Frigate had a single capitol-class Plasma Cannon, and two-dozen Crossbow Missile Pods, each one held five missiles.

Later that day they were scheduled to be rinforced with a Destroyer, the Intrepid Class Destroyer Iroquois. It had two Plasma Cannons and five dozen Arbalist Class Missile Pods, better than the Crossbows of older ships.

But however, unknown to the Republic, five enemy Battleships had slipped past the Republic Border patrol and were almost at the Victoria System, their mission to deliver an unspeakably horrible biological weapon, Hexinite Gas. A single isotope had enough power to kill five thousand Humans.

Ulik’Tai scientists had devised Hexonite gas becasue it delivered the most painful death; you start to liquefy wholesale, the nerves going last so you felt it until the end. This would be it’s first use against a whole planet.

The space near Victoria III boiled, and churned. Someone was comming through Slipspace, the non-Einsteinian demension where light speed travel was possible.

The three Frigates thought it was the Iroquois, so they didn’t arm themselves or activate thier energy shields. However, a Battle Squadron of huge Battleships appeared, thier massive weapons arrays at the ready.

They fired streamers of Plasma and volleys of missiles, before the Republic Frigates knew what happened. They had no chance. Within two minutes, the last starship burned.

Then they moved onto the planet, esablishing orbit. They fired thier special missiles loaded with Hexonite gas; a volley of viral death.

The missiles bursted ten meters above the ground; sickly green gas clouds grew until they could be seen from orbit. The gas was inhaled by people, who began to slowly liquefy, screaming in agony. When thier Hex weapons were depleted, they entered lower orbit, thier engines screaming and tearing gashes of flame in the atmoshpere.

Their bulbous Plasma turrets heated to a bright red; streamers of superheated Plasma bombarded the surface, sparking huge wildfires in forests. Smoke and Hex Gas was so thick in the air surface visablility was nill; and still another volley of Plasma came.

Whole city blocks melted and burned; the poplation choking, liquefying, and burning. More plasma came, blasting the once proud cities into molten, radioactive slag. Angry orange, red, yellow, and black colors played accross the surface, engulfing the planet. Angry black clouds filled the sky; lighting and thunder sparked world-wide.

Victoria III was dying; it’s people, animals, even it’s ecosystem. It itself was dying. And noone could save it.

The huge Battleships, finaly satisfied with thier work, blasted out of orbit and dissapeared into Slipspace, leaving Victoria III to burn and choke.

Captain Kevarr sat in his chair on the Bridge of the Republic Destroyer Iroquois. He looked over the holo-graphic display, which sported numerous status reports, statistics, and maps. It was a normal day; they were going to reinforce the Victoria system’s defensive picket.

"Sir, dropping out of Slipspace," Reported an Ensign.

The black nothingness on the viewscreens were replaced by stars; and several planets, along with a huge orange sun.

However, Victoria was not all it should be. The Planet Victoria III, one a proud blue blanet, was now an orb of swirling flames engulfing large patches of the surface. Sickly green glouds and black thunderheads swirled in the atmosphere.

In orbit, the still-burning skeletal frames of three Republic Battle Frigates, one still sporting the insignea of the Galactic Republic, slowly tumbed into orbit.

Kevarr sat in disbelief, as did the whole crew at a window or viewport. This was devestation on a scale never seen before. "Number two," Kevarr said slowly, "Give me an interspacial communique for FleetCOM, recording on my mic."

"Aye aye, sir," The officer reported, "Mic’s... hot."

"This is Captain Kevarr of the Destroyer Iroquois, we have jumped from Slipspace into the Victoria system at oh six fifty-three hours. We have found the defense picket destroyed, and Victoria III looks as if it has undergone heavy Plasma Bombardment. Also, Alpha Level Scans return heavy amounts of a mutation bio agent; an unknown WMD class weapon most likely. No survivors are detected. Recommend that all available fire control ships converge on Victoria, bringing search teams with bio-protection armor and radiation shields. We are currently 462324 Star-Klicks from the planet; initiating investigation of the remains of the Victoria picket. Activating Beta Level Scanners; we will report findings soon. Kevarr out." Kevarr finished his report and pushed a button, sending an ultra-light beam through Slipspace to the nearest COMM satellite, which was in the Howard System.

The COMM Satellite would then relay the message through the Omni-Web; this method of sending Communiques made messages travel much faster but could only be used in Friendly space.

"Sir, Beta Level Scans report Plasma impacts all over the debris. Energy signatures match the frequencies commonly used by.... Ulik’Tai Battleships," Reported Kevarr’s Exec. Officer.

"Ulik’Tai!?" Kevarr said to himself.

The boroadcast was on all the Holo-Stations; the President of the Galactic Republic was going to make a speech. "My fellow Citizens of the Republic...." He began, "At six o’ clock in the morning, on September 11, yesterday, the Victoria Star System was brutaly attacked; a whole planet wiped out, by forces of the Ulik’Tai Confederacy. The Congress has voted unanimously; as of this very second, the United Galactic Republic is at WAR with the Ulik’Tai Confederacy. God Help us all."

And the Republic Armed Services mobilized for war; thier battle cry and great recruitment slogan being, for the whole war, "REMEMBER VICTORIA!"
