My heart is broken- not to the point where it can't be repaired, but a BIG chunk has been broken off of it.
Christopher Reeve- Superman both in & out of movies- passed away yesterday at age 52 (after having a heart attack at home then being taken to the hospital), surrounded by his loving and supportive family.
His acting mesmerized me from the first time I saw him on the big screen. I was able to fall into the story as if it was reality happening before me, because he made it so real.
His Superman was the last superhero that I watched & liked- Steve Reeves WAS Superman in my mind & heart until Christopher Reeve took the role- then HE was Superman- it fit him like skin. He went on to truely BECOME Superman in real life.
Nine years ago, Christopher Reeve had a horrible accident while participating in a sport that he LOVED- competition jumping of horses. He became almost totally paralyzed from a broken neck, but fought back to become an actor/director & outspoken advocate for improved spinal chord injury treatment & better coverage by insurance. He fought for embrionic stem cell research- a technique that could help and/or cure paralysis from spinal chord injuries.
Recently he had been able to move his finger & started getting movement in his lower extremities. His goal was to walk again- on his own- and was well on his way. He BELIEVED that he would and his determination was making it happen. He didn't just think it- he LIVED it.
Christopher- you were Superman on the screen four times, then you became a REAL Superman in every day life. You will ALWAYS be Superman to me and millions of others in this world.
You are now free of the body that bound your being so thoroughly. How does it feel to walk free again- THIS time among the angels?
