Hate. What a fucked up emotion. How can you HATE someone you don't even know?

Closing time at one San Antonio bar turns into a scene right out of a horror film, after a man allegedly tried to attack a group of people with a chainsaw.

Witnesses say a man was thrown out of Double T's bar for starting fights, but once he left, they say he didn't stop. He allegedly came to his truck, pulled out a chainsaw and went back after them.

"We walked in and this gentleman started harassing my friend, calling him a bunch of racial slurs," said James Hansen.

The bar staff had to physically remove 31-year-old Rodney Wade Gottschalk, but the fighting didn't stop there.

"The next thing I know, the guy comes running from his truck with a chainsaw," said Kung. They ran inside and locked the bar door behind them, but they say the nightmare continued when he tried to cut through the glass.

All because of the color of his skin. People like that make me ashamed to be white. I have tried to study the hate and have yet to find any answers. From the Holocaust to the lynchings there are photographs and stories that could fill a library. Every book, every picture... every memory brings a tear. I sit at my desk and cry because there are no answers. How do you cure a disease you can not name? Tolerance is only a band aid. It doesn't find the source. I used to think it was environment. Create a society where there are no colors and the people will learn to adapt. But I've met those who were persecuted themselves... and yet could not over come their prejudice. People whose families died in gas chambers that refused to be kind to someone because of their skin tone. After 9/11 people were persecuted based on their political beliefs. White or black. Patriot or traitor. There is no common ground in between to agree to. Where does that leave us? Where do we find the root of hatred? When Martin Luther King said "We shall overcome" did he mean the hatred of others or the hatred in all of us?

Controversial response, "Because the bible told us so." How many people feel that religion is the cause of so much of this hatred and racism.

Surely more people are dieing in the name of religion than anything else. Should Jewish people still hate Germans because of the Holocaust, or should we all think live and let live.

Personally, I don't care anyones religion and colour, I don't sterotype all Muslims because of Sept 11, but I do feel that the greater majority of good Mulims/Jews ect must renounce the bad ones and not hide/support them.

Well that's all.

I disagree. The bible didn't tell the white people to hate the black. The Jews may have been hated FOR their religious background, but the Nazi's hated them because of their success in Germany. The Jewish people were blamed for prospering while others were poor, but the bible didn't tell the Germans to kill them.

Agreed LK, but you are educated to make your own thoughts and decisions, many other are taught racism and hate from an early age.

I too am amazed.

To-days hate is surely being flamed under the name of religion.
Is it? You never answered about the slavery issue. The fear of the unknown. The fear of different lifestyles. Hate crimes are rampant all over the world because of race, gender, lifestyle, sexual preference.

I'm Jewish, but I don't throw out the anti-semitism card everytime someone doesn't approve of Israel's tactics. Unfortunately there are too many people who do.

Okay, enough is enough. Diva is the most intellectually rounded individual that I know. She litterally cares for everyone, unless you are an idiot as I can sometimes be.

I am sick and tired of people as the post in this thread that religion is the cause or reason for someone's problem.

I am not a religious scholar but, I don't know of any religion that promotes hate.

Christianity - "Love thy neighbor, even as thyself." - a commandment, no doubt.

I can't speak of any other religion. But there are people proclaiming themselves devoted to this and that religion committing crimes of hatred, theft and debachery.

Civilization and human nature are the reasons that these people are allowed the opportunity to do such things. Hell, criminals by far have more rights and freedoms than America's homeless and poorer populations with all of their gyms, schools, and amenities.

You want to blame someone, Look in the freakin' mirror. When is the last time that you stood up and spoke out?

I was not trying to act the idiot or make any one else feel one. If you are sure that religion is not the cause of much hatred, that's fine with me.

I have now removed the offending post.

Not to worry, better to keep the peace.

Like gluttony or drunkenness, hatred seems an agreeable vice when you (one) practices it yourself, but disgusting when observed in others.

Honey, you're one of the most understanding, open minded, loving, nuturing and compassionate people I know. No wonder you don't understand hate.

I only hate some people--for things they personally have done to me in RL, and I will get back at them for what they have done, sooner or later. I think it is quite different from hate such as racism. Hating someone for some abstract impersonal reason is quite incomprehensible to me.

It is so easy to hate!!! Why in the world do people have to hate?? Just look at the one you hate, really just look!!! To hate someone is to be just plain stupid. I can go on and do a big rant but why?? That is too easy for the hater just to hate more......

As much as it pains me, i have to go with Glad's original point. I think religion breeds hate. Not directly per say. But religion does put the blinders on from an early age. It teaches you about differences, and usually tells you that you are right and they are wrong. Homophobia, sexism come from the bible, why not racism? What about the Egypt? They weren't painted in the best light in the bible. Jewish people call non believers Gentiles, that sounds racist to me. The bible instiles labels, labels lead to stereotypes, and they lead to well, you get the drift...

I'm not saying religion breeds hate directly, but it is the first step. It sets boundries from the get go. He believes something different then you? He's wrong. He wants to live with another man? He's wrong. Its really easy to hate what we don't understand. Religion makes it hard to understand certain things because your told from an early age its evil or wrong. With that mentality, why bother to try to understand? And thats why people don't. No religion and you take away alot of the things that make us different, in a good way.

However, I must state that hate itself is not an evil emotion. No emotion can be evil. Without hate, how do we trully understand love? Can't have one without the other. Left and right, light and dark, good and evil, love and hate, etc....

Feel free to shread me, i know its coming, but g'dammit, its the truth.
