So the site was hacked... maybe. I dunno. What I do know is that they had to transfer data to another computer and now half the shit doesnt work. I also know I'm going to be charged for 2 to 3 hours of labor at $90 an hour to get the site up and running. I'm sooo not in a happy place right now. :(

The key to saving money is having a backup of the site where you can reach it. Although I work more with html, video files and images I try to keep a copy of my site on a cd rom or two, two or three hard disks and the servers have fully built in redundancy.

www.infomaniak.ch. Swiss hosting provider. Quite good and cheap, best of all it's half an hr's drive away depending on traffic.

How much would you as non website owners or foreign owners be willing to pay for a website of your own?

I couldn't stomach that quantity of money to keep a website going, sorry to say.

I know I'm going to get a lot of criticism for this but I would already be hunting for a better server deal.

It's amazing how little time has gone by. I've felt like this year has been three or four years in length somehow.

The year has been both very long and very short in my opinion. If I measure it by how long I feel I've had a full time job, it's been twenty years, if I measure it by how long I've dated Caufield, then it's been twenty minutes.

As for keeping a website, I think it depends. In Diva's case, she's poured herself into this forum...people love it and it would be devastating to move it.

However, as for my mom's website, she doesn't have too many visitors and it's just starting up anyway, so if it crashed it would be worth moving.

I think it's a matter of what the site's purpose is, and what moving it would really mean for the webgod/goddess/person.

Moving a website does not mean changing name or anything of the sort. Rather it means that you move from one server to another. In other words all that changes is the IP address and the server's location.

It's also more money. No matter what, I had to pay to get the data restored. I have a daily backup of the server... but it wont do me any good if the server isnt on.

I made a big decision a while back to switch to a dedicated server. I was tired of having to deal with other sites slowing mine and the limit of the bandwidth. It cost a lot of money to do, but this is more than a hobby so it's worth it. I set aside a certain amount for this server every month... It's just hard when something goes wrong at the worst time.

It's not fair that you have to foot the bill totally & take the hit personally when something happens to this site. Even though you are the one that 'owns' it, it feels like we all are part owners, too & that means we can help out when we want to- right?
