Blood Bank Offers Beer Vouchers To Donors

CLEVELAND -- Are you hesitant to donate blood? How about a "pint for a pint"?

Cleveland's transit authority is handing out vouchers for a pint of any beverage, including beer, in exchange for a pint of blood. The promotion is the latest gift offered by businesses and organizations that sponsor drives to try to build up the blood banks.

Some donors in Michigan who roll up their sleeves will get a racetrack T-shirt, hat and pin. And sponsors in San Diego have given away whale-watching trips.

Many blood banks are running desperately low. Some in parts of Ohio have less than a day's supply.

A Red Cross spokeswoman said nationally, there's about 2½ days' worth of blood on hand. She said a healthy supply is five to seven days' worth.

Give me a break....What happened to concern for mankind?

I would donate blood, but they don't want it--I have had a TB vaccination and have lived in TB-risk areas (and test positive for TB antibodies due to the vaccination though I haven't had the disease). That, as well as having ultra-low blood pressure as a norm is why my blood is a no-no to any reputable agency such as Red Cross--and I wouldn't donate to not-so-reputable ones.

I've given blood twice...but my mom just found out she has a genetic blood clotting disorder, so I don't give blood anymore in case I have it. Last time I gave blood, I got sick as hell. :(
