As a person who has gone against forum rules I propose resolution 66.52b to be passed. This resolution is aimed at making us practice our writing skills in order to refer to someone who we don't agree with in a more positive light.

An example of a bad post:

Fucking idiot bastards piss me off on the road when they hog the left lane without going at the correct speed limit and I feel like running over them with a tank, or at least their car.

Correct post.

When driving home after a long day of tiring work there is only one thing on my mind, getting home. Unfortunatley I occasionaly find that certain individuals are not paying as much attention to the road as they could either thruogh smoking or talking on their phones. I wish they would either give up smoking or pull in. As to phone users I wish they'd use hands free and concentrate on allowing traffic to flow more freely.

How do you feel about this resolution? Shall we ratify it?

I agree with that but not with the example given! JakeD would never get to post again. :p

I appreciate you trying to work through this. Unfortunately, that would be me in the first example. I think the example is confusing. It is referring to a situation that happened outside of the forum. Your resolution is pertaining to people within the forum.

Example: If someone says "I love corn" and I say "People who love corn are idiots" I am calling them an idiot.

The difference is that I was referring to someone in the forum. That is a flame. It is always good to think about what you are saying before hitting the enter key. I'm not worried about soming cussing because they had a lousy day. that's why I started this place. so I could freely express my emotions. The issue is when they are directed at someone else on this board.

Yeah, I was gonna say something like that before I decided to pick on JakeD.

I'm all for thinking before speaking and clarifying before reacting. I try to always do that. Unfortunately, even THAT will not always work. It doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Combine that with less sensitivity, and hey! We got it done!! :D

How about if something someone posts pisses you off, you leave the post without starting an arguement with them about it? I do that damn near every day, and not just here, but on other forums as well. If someone rubs you the wrong way, just ignore it. Damn, life's too damned short to worry about what other people think, do or say. Call 'em a moron to yourself, hit "back" on your browser and go on to the next thread. Trust me, it ain't that hard. We don't always have to be right, and admitting when you're wrong is very theraputic!

My point is, and I think I'll keep saying that, is that if we insult people who are off the forum, make it a habit to insult others then how easy and how casual does it become to insult others around you. If you're with a group of friends and you enjoy calling each other names it's very different to when you're online. This resolution is about the way we write in general about everyone, not just about the people online but also offline.

www.archive.org is probably archiving every single front page to this site and in so doing the swearing is preserved. If search engines can search the engine more insults can be found. In other words there's nothing to gain by swearing.

By taking a policy of better self expression (ain't that a nice term for a politician) we make sure to get our point across with the least damage possible. By calling people, fools, moron idiots and more when on the front page where space is limited it's good, it summarises what what we think. In the forum though it may be better for all of us to make sure that the language we use is something we would prefer a five year old to speak.

Of course that doesn't limit our vocabulary, just our way of refering to individuals or in duh viduals as Scott Adams calls them if I'm not mistaken.

By actions such as vomiting in the /me tags
it's not very nice in one of our posts, and the / me thread would die but at least it's a quick way of letting me know I may be offended by what's written so I skim over it.

And finally I've taken up enough of your time so carry on.

make it a habit to insult others then how easy and how casual does it become to insult others around you. That does often happen, true.

By taking a policy of better self expression (ain't that a nice term for a politician) we make sure to get our point across with the least damage possible. [snip] In the forum though it may be better for all of us to make sure that the language we use is something we would prefer a five year old to speak. Better self-expression is certainly something to which one should aspire, but it has its place just like everything else. I can express myself quite well with or without the use of foul and/or crass language. However, I realize that the effectiveness will not be the same in one arena as it will be in another.

I know how to be civilized. I know how to be dispassionate. I enjoy being both during debates.

However, I also know how to be crass, and I enjoy it. The same goes for being crude, nasty-minded, and for cursing. I enjoy all these things, and they're part of my self-expression in the appropriate places.

While others may think so, I don't believe it makes me any "less" to behave this way when it's warranted (or even when it's not and I just feel like it) because I know how to conduct myself in all manners of ways.

All this is not to say that I feel like it's ok for me to be crass and crude towards others whenever I want. I don't think it is, and I always try to behave that way. Sometimes, though, I DO want to go off about the stupid bitch that cut me off this morning on the way to work and made me miss my fucking fresh coffee!

That didn't hurt her at all because she didn't have to hear it. (Of course, if the bitch cut me off, she deserves to hear it, anyway, because that's just rude.)

Ok, I think I've babbled enough. Did I make any sense to anyone? please? pretty please?

I am all for individual people deciding to work on their posting habits or personal habits in general. However, the rule on NCT as far as flaming is geared towards fellow posters. Besides racist remarks, that's the only rule on posting. I cuss, am sarcastic and love to joke. I am able to refrain from personal attacks when in a discussion/debate without changing my style. It's something I do in my personal life too.

I love the /me hack and laughed my ass off when I saw LK's post. That's classic NCT spirit right there. Good luck on your personal project and I hope that others think about this when answering posts. :)

A little guy walks into a bar and slips on some vomit. He picks himself up and sits on a stool. A big guy comes in and slips on the vomit, too. The first guy says, "Hey, I did that!" So the big guy beats up the little guy.

Does anyone know where I was going with this?

CURSE?? ME???? NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!

If someone comes on here & swears up a storm- or HURRICANE, for that matter- & it's to blow off steam, I've got no problem with that at all, but if someone comes on & flames someone else on this site, I have a HUGE problem.

I can be about THE most sarcastic bitch in the world (ask my (ex??) husband) it's in my damn DNA- I'm from Long Island, New York! Females who were born & brought up there are KNOWN for it. I think it's something to do with the air...

As far as cursing, I've done it all my life- it's about the only outlet for anger I used to have (unless I wanted to become the US's second female serial killer) & now it's part of who I am.

Same with raunchyness, crudeness, dirty jokes, farting & enjoying it, & a number of other 'unladylike things'. I can be very reserved- if I want to be. I choose NOT to be & that's not going to change.

I'm with Boozer, Enti & Diva on this one. Good suggestion, though- the only bad idea is one that someone doesn't bring up. Sorry, dude- you want 'polite & genteel' I don't think you're gonna find it here. And if someone wants to save it, cool! What they gonna do- come spank me for being bad? PLEASE??????????

Hey, fish-mother, my wife happens to be from Syosset and she's not excessively crass or crude, so let's not lump ALL Islanders into that category! (BTW, what part of "upstate" do you occupy? I'm a Rochesterian meself.)

And thanks, NTP, for laughing at my silly joke. I'm starved for attn.
