i think the press (as a whole) has a problem with providing more detail than is relevant to the story

for example, the 21 month old baby who's mother died. saying that the soiled diaper was on the floor doesnt do anything to move the story. there was a murder on the Cape in Mass and the mom was home alone with the young child. details were provided about how the child was curled up with the mom's body.

it doesnt serve a purpose to the story and only provides images to the readers that arent needed.

if a co-worker calls in saying they're sick with a stomach flu the point isnt moved any further ahead if they give you the graphic details of how many times, where, the color etc of each and every hurl

the press as a whole needs to rethink the details they're providing and bear in mind what the story is

[Hey hon, good to see ya!]

I agree with you 110%. When I first heard/read the story tears welled up. Then I just felt ill. There is no reason to go into such detail. But until we find a way to reign in this monster we call media without stepping on civil liberties... our hands are 'liberally' tied.

Who's going to take on the task? Just as our judicial system needs an overhaul, so does the media's responsibility factor. Being held accountable for their stories and sources is just the first step. The funny part is that the media cries louder than the people about the right to free speech.

Necessary evils. We have to have them! take this right away and you take the right of anything being reported. Graphic it may be, but it's just an event that occurs everyday around some part of the globe!

i slightly disagree here

i buy the paper to read the news of what happened, yes

however if i've purchased a 'respectable' paper i dont have any expectation (or desire) for overly graphic details

there are other publications that provide it and i purposesly dont buy them

I think the thing to remember here boys and girls is that they do this kind of thing because you/me pay them to. We buy the stuff they print and in doing so encourage them to go further. So if you dont like it read something else. Climb into bed curl up all nice and warm and settle in to bambi. Or a nice gardening magazine.

But most importantly think happy thoughts we all need more of those.

And while you're at it... write all of the network stations, cable news stations, online newspapers, and ... Hmmm... Oh yeah! Shoot off a letter to every single newpaper company in the United States. Yeah, that might get you somewhere.... NOT!!!

that shit about the soiled diaper served once purpose. to put an emotional twist on the story. why? to provide drama. for the news to add/keep sponsors they need to do more than just talk about stuff that happened. they need to make the reader/viewer feel like a need to read/watch the story. to feel the story. to need more stories from that news source.

yup, the news have finally realized that to make news interesting (where previously it wasn't) they had to add elements of what every other show already provides. for that we can thank the capitalist dollar.
