A senior doctor thinks King Herod (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_504549.html?menu=news.scienceanddiscovery) was killed by kidney disease and genital gangrene.

Dr Jan Hirschmann has spent months looking for clues as to how the biblical king died.

He studied ancient texts which listed his symptoms and then compared them with those of known diseases.

Herod was 69 when he died more than 2,000 years ago and is remembered as a cruel leader who executed thousands of babies in an attempt to kill the infant Jesus.

Dr Hirschmann, of the University of Washington, found that Herod's final days were marked by intense itching, stomach problems, breathlessness, convulsions and genital gangrene.

He told delegates at the Clinical Pathologic Conference in Baltimore that the only disorder which accounts for almost all the symptoms is chronic kidney disease.

Dr Hirschmann added: "I finally concluded that the most likely explanation was that his chronic kidney disease was complicated by an unusual infection of the male genitalia called Fournier's gangrene."

Each year, the conference examines the death of an historical figure and past 'patients' have included Alexander the Great, Beethoven, General Custer and Claudius.

That'll teach em to try and kill baby Jesus. Dick rot.

I was going to say something about spending so much time finding the reason for a death of a person 2,000 years ago as opposed to diseases that are killing people today... But I found this quite interesting. Besides, I don't think that we should dictate what a person does with their life. Anyone have an opinion on this?

Wow,,, in studying the other historical figures, do you think they determined that Custer died from a heart attack when he saw all those Oglala Sioux coming up over the rise?????:D
