The chief of UCLA's medical school apologized Monday for the apparent sale of parts of bodies that were donated to the school and announced steps to ensure such practices do not recur.
"These alleged crimes violate the trust of the donors, their families and UCLA," said Dr. Gerald S. Levey, vice chancellor of UCLA Medical Sciences and dean of the UCLA School of Medicine. "We are deeply sorry."
I came to work Friday and was told we were going to work some overtime to be a resource line for an article in the paper. I jumped for the chance to make the extra cash and spent the weekend getting ready for the 13 hour shift. On Sunday I started my search for links and ran across the article on UCLA. They dropped it a day earlier... the bastards. Then I read. Suddenly the overtime took a backseat to the realization of what I was going to deal with. Those bastards took loved ones and sold them like wood. They chopped them up for profit and I am going to have to do their dirty work and talk to the family.
Monday morning the phone was already ringing. We hadn't even put out the number and people were calling. I spoke with mothers, fathers, daughters, sisters, brothers and sons. I listened to them cry and tell me stories. They wept for loved ones as the healing wounds opened once more. I had loved ones scream and cuss at me, and all I could do was say that I understood and try to read through the script while still showing that I understood how they feel. That was the easy part.. I am in the same boat. My friend went against Jewish tradition and donated her body to UCLA. After working here for 32 years it seemed the right thing to do. She gave her life to this place, and then in death gave the rest of her. To know that she may have ended up being used for someone's profit sickens me. I ache like the people I am talking to do, and all I can do is take their info and promise that someone will call them back and tell them the fate of their loved one. Money is shit. Power is shit. In the end all you have are memories and love. Now these are our memories. I hope they rot in hell.
