The NY Times published these pictures (http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2001/12/29/international/30PLAN.slideshow_1.html) of the shoe bomber being restrained. The incredible thing is that they look so calm. A little nervous, but that's it. My favorite is of the basketball player's turn to stand watch over him until they landed. Man, I could just imagine the look that he must have. What do you think should happen to this guy [the bomber]?

I say put him in something self propelled, maybe a rocket? Load him up with explosives, send him into space and let him blow himself up. It can't possibly cost any more than having to deal with the judicial system?

All I can say is that if I was on that plane, I'd be the one beating him into submission. I'd make sure he wasn't going to be a problem until we landed.

Give him his shoes back after a flight to Afghanistan and let him sweep the country for landmines till he finds all of them.
Looking at the pics is eerie when you think those around his seat, if not the entire plane, are lucky to be alive.

His real name is Richard Reid. He hails from London, and he converted to Islam in a Young Offender's Institution. I feel a certain sense of pity for him: most of his life has been spent in abject psychological torment, poverty and insecurity. Nonetheless: he should be incarcerated forever for attempted mass murder - the deterrent element of the law is more important than its rehabilitative aspect at this time. The State must be protected.

I look at his face and want to spit. I agree with usantic. I look at the people on that plane and just think how close they came to dying. Look into their eyes. My mind is whirling with thoughts of 9/11. I can't even say it. I have no pity.

Am, I can't make a cake much less a bomb. And I would never even know about how to put it in a shoe to smuggle it onto a plane. He's not some poor misguided bloke. This was carefully planned. Just because he fucked it up, doesn't mean he's any less evil.

What happens to him now? does anybody know? Who gets his arse?

The offence was over US airspace, as I understand it, Diva: he's entirely subject to the righteous wrath of US law.

This guy looks like a total fuck up. Attatch his neck to a jumbo and his legs to the terminal building, then wave him off back to blighty!

No way, Hose, Scranton: Blighty doesn't want him back - not even half of him. Besides, you lot saw him first, and according to the Ancient Laws of Bagsy and Finders-Keepers you have to look after him and find him a nice hutch where he can spend the rest of his days appealing against the death penalty/perusing the Ladybird edition of the Koran.

Scranton is a Scouser? I never knew that, sorry, mate - I never realized that Location: Floating was a reference to Gerry and the Pacemaker's "Ferry 'Cross the Mersey" :)

Does this mean I can dig out all those appalling old Carla Lane jokes from ancient, highly unrealistic episodes of "Bread", then?

well maybe the death penalty would be the best thing for him. I cant see that a guy that ugly has much to live for anyway.

Holy shit you want to hang a bloke because of the way he looks? Perhaps you would make a great judge one day if you really apply your self
