You have some extra time on your hands and have several equally interesting pieces of reading materal in front of you. What do you reach for first?
I'll read anything, but I prefer classic literature.

Definitely horror for me. I have always loved and always will love any horror related material. Actually the only other message board that I post on is a horror related board.
My favourite author is Stephen King. My mom introduced me to his writing at a young age. I think I read Firestarter when I was 10 and there was no turning back.

I tend to reach for the humor. It's intelligent (hopefully) and it's almost always a very quick read. I delve into deeper stuff when I have more time on my hands. For school, I'm reading the following simultaneously: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Chaka, The Duchess of Malfi, Sonnets by authors like Milton, Spenser, and Sidney, Twelfth Night, and some shitty Puritan Poetry. So, in my spare time I'm reading simultaneously: Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them and Cosmo...you can onlyhandle so much English Lit before you look for something lighter.
I like reading tech books and how-to's. I dont get shit from books that don't explain stuff. If I read I want to learn something not fantasize, what's the use?

I prefer history but not the factual history books so much as those written by contemporary authors such as Milan Kundera, Albert Camus, Zola and these authors. They reflect what life was like and explore some topics in interesting ways.

SciFan.
It's just escape for me, that's why I love it, I know a lot of people have "issues" with the "childish" ideals of good V evil, magic V mahem, trolls, elves, dragons, godonlyknowsits, etc...
but it just pure escapology.
(it's what I write, too, btw)

i cant wait for the next book in the dark tower series
Yeah, The Wolves of Calla? I want to read it too, but I have to get through the series. I haven't even finished The Gunslinger yet, but it kicks ass.
I'm a big fan of horror stories. I really like Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. As is usually the case, the books are much better than the movies!!!
Stephen King kicks ass. From a Buick 8, his newest book, may not have the same originality as say, The Shining, but it is beautifully written.
On a tangent, I recommend heavily to any action/drama/horror/humor fans to pick up Dean Koontz's Fear Nothing and Seize the Night. They are two of the best books I have ever read, and certainly his best works. Just a recommendation.
