When do you think a person should be able to legally drink?

Just like my home province it should be 18. 16 is too young and I don't feel kids can handle getting thier licenses and drinking at the same time. I bet drinking and driving stats would go up. 21 is a little too old and I feel most people can at least handle themselves before this age.

16 is too young, generally and 18 you're supposedly a legal adult. So, if you can die for yer durn country you should be able to drink. Dammit.

I think it should be legal at 18. If you're old enough to get married, go to war, be an "adult" then you should be able to kick back with a beer or a drink. double dammit!

Well that's what happened here in Oz, in WWII they were drafting 18Y.O's to fight for their country, but the legal "adult" age (for voting, drinking) was 21...so they got narky and said that if they could fight & die for their country they should have a say in how it's run and be drunk when they do it!
so the legal age is 18.
Anyway, I think the government just sets the age and thinks that the kids will just start drinking at least 2 years before that anyway so they set it at 21 if they want you to drink at 19, or 18 if they want you to drink at 16 and so on...
Hey do you know how much governments make offa booze?
Twistedzipper has it close. They should outlaw booze & legalize smoke. But that's a separate issue, and we can have a flamewar some other time (has a legalization thread *ever* not turned into a flame war? www.smokedot.org doesn't count.
But yeah, as long as it's legal, any legal adult should be able to do it. You can vote, you can die for your country, you can get married and screw your life up *real* good, but you can't buy beer. And yes, that was heavily plagarized from an old Mojo Nixon song.
it should be 25 unless you are serving your country via the military, then the age limit should be disregarded.
BRING IT ON!
I think the drinking age is fine as it is. The way I see it, there's already enough drunken teenagers out there right now, and they all have relatively easy access to alcohol, through someone. The only difference with someone being able to drink at a younger age would be their having direct access to it, therefore getting polluted more often, therefore causing more problems and ensuring a general lack of responsibility (as if there's not enough already) amongst teenagers. Of course, this is all in reference to Americans, so our friends overseas and in adjoining countries can disregard this. Hell, I even agree with Desciple in the fact that it should be higher, but I really don't think that the age limit should be disregarded for the armed forces, just maybe dropped down a few years. That's my view. If you don't like it, fine. You don't have to.
And if you say that American teenagers DON'T have easy access to alcohol, I'll call bullshit faster than a fat man would jump on a Twinkie. In Texas, it was a rare occasion when we couldn't find alcohol. I had older friends, too, so that was a big-time hook up. There's always a way to find alcohol. That's why I stopped drinking so much, because it got to be absurd. I figure that I can wait for it, and if I need to get piss drunk that badly, then there's something wrong with me.
I understand the need to "fit in", "enjoy life" and "jus' partyin'". Are these adequate excuses to get bombed, toasted, slammed or any other phrase that is relevant? I don't think so. It is easy to say now that I am older and can look back and see the damage that alcohol assisted me in doing to myself and my potentials. I really wish that I had someone then to talk to me and direct me in the correct paths to take.
There is nothing wrong with drinking socially (this coming not from my religious beliefs). You must drink responsibly, though. I wish that I could have back in my life the friends that I lost to drunk drivers on both sides of the coin (driving while intoxicated and killed by a drunk driver).
Not to mention the poor behavior that was associated being intoxicated and the lack of judgement. (Man, she was ugly!)
Alcohol and legal drinking ages really have nothing to do with it except for causing minor blips in underage drinker aquiring alcohol in one form or another.
All we can do is be an example to those looking up to us and do the right thing. It is a state of mind that we are searching for when we drink to get drunk. Find a healthier way to achieve this state of mind. Myself, it took me thirty years to realize that even sober, people think that I act stupid. Why make it worse.........?
LOL
I hope that I made sense.

I'm 21 now so I can drink everywhere. First time I got drunk was at 17 yrs old. Whilst studying in England because it's their habit I used to get drunk frequently. Personally believe you should be allowed to drink before you're allowed to drive, mainly so you know the effects of alcohol on your system thereby if possible removing the danger of drunk drivers.

I believe the drinking age should be knocked down to 18. I mean, I drank WAAAAAAY more back when I was 15, 16 years old than I do now at 19, and I still have 2 years go to before I reach legal drinking age. When I do turn 21, I'll probably just buy me a margarita, daquiri, screwdriver, something like that if I go out to eat or something, but that'll probably be it. I know all too well the effects of drinking heavily. Like most of my older friends have told me, they bought and consumed a whole lot more alcohol BEFORE they turned 21 than they do now. Plus, if you're considered an adult, you can vote for the President and whatever the hell you feel like voting for, buy cigarettes (except in Alabama...where you have to be 19), or go into the army at 18, I believe you should be allowed to drink as well.
* MeLsWeEtiE waits to shove foot in mouth...or a smirnoff lol

smirnoff aren't too bad.
Originaly Smirnov... can see the medallions on the bottle from the days when it was an imperial vodka. With socialism though it moved over to the US and changed it's name to Smirnoff.
The vodka is tripple distlilled through several tons of charcoal at around 80% proof but watered down before it is distributed.
Quite a nice drink... depending on whether pure or not.
p.s. hardly touch alcohol anymore.

How odd. You can marry your brother at 14 in Alabama, but no cigarettes til 19? That state scares me.

I voted 21, its the ultimate milestone after all :) plus drinking aint all that cracked up to be.
I mean who gets enjoyment out of getting smashed every weekend or whatever, 21 is a better age to start drinking.
*edit*
After reading Mels post, I have to agree with what she was saying about the army and so on.
So i'm changing my mind even tho I have voted for 21 now, it should be 18, its actually 18 in the uk :)
