Dylan Thomas was a magnificent poet but a surprisingly repulsive human being, according to AJP Taylor. They used to share rooms at university and Taylor was continually amazed by the aspirant poet's unrestrained cynicism, dipsomania and mean-spiritedness. This doesn't negate the worth of his poetry, of course, but it makes you think, doesn't it?
