Jenn, I know the feeling. But, the bottom line is, if he can't trust you then what does that say about his viewpoint of you. Or his comfort level with your relationship. If you trust someone, then 'DOG' remarks shouldn't bother him. Because you are the one in control. If he doesn't trust you, then you at least deserve an explaination as to why.
