I saw a test where Cable beat DSL in a high-speed test. Has anyone had both? If so, did you notice a difference? Which do you prefer?

in the UK DSL is a different line the further you are away from an exchange box the slower it gets you can be miles away from an exchange with Cable as it is using fibre optic lines to carry the signal and it doesn't degrade the signal the further it goes down the line like DSL does.

I live out in the sticks, so neither cable or DSL are available to me. :( I HATE STINKING DIAL-UP!!!!!!!!!!!

I expect that is cause america is such a big places it would be too costly to run cables to all the little areas, its more cost effective to just do the hugely populated areas and not have to venture out too far with there cables.

Its the same for us in the uk Boozer your not alone :) *hugs*

I have dial-up too, Boozer. It's because I live in the boondocks.

I used to have a dial up, ah the days of old ;)

I currently have dsl...depending on how many other people I share the connection with it can be faster than cable. But Saturday night when everyone on campus is downloading porn...well...it's pretty damn slow.

I have dial up, so I don't really know what I am missing. Blue on the other hand, will let me know how slow my computer is when I get him to look at it...... Oh well such is life....

I connect using my c=64's 1200baud modem, dialing into my shell account & use lynx to browse.

:)

I have cable. Where I live now, I get much better speeds than I got using cable at my old house. I never really notice it being slow. I have my pc, my daughter's pc, and my next door neighbor (shhhh) all sharing it, *plus* I run my website behind the firewall, and I still never think "gosh my connection is slow". What a run-on I had there :D I usually notice that the server's bandwidth is more limited than mine. Microsoft usually has lots 'o bandwidth to test downloads, and Google for "snappiness" tests. My site from outside is slow, due to my upload caps. 64 or 128k, I think.

That said, if I had a landline, I'd probably switch to DSL. Yes, the download speeds are a bit slower, but it's easier & cheaper to get a static IP, and the better providers (wow! a *choice* of fast ISPs) say in their user agreements that it's ok to run servers. No more no-ip.com and worrying that they'll start blocking ports 80 & 22.

Dial-up stinks. I would quit smoking before I gave up broadband. Even my grandmother got sick of it & went to cable. And you should hear her talk about AOL :p Given a choice between dial-up or no internet? Dial-up :D It *is* better than nothing.

Ok, I know it's sad that I get passionate about so few things, and I chose the subject of broadband choices. I'm just glad my gf doesn't read nochicktrix. She'd never let me hear the end of it :D

I get the same thing when I talk about cell phones, everyone I konw that hears me talk about that thinks I should be in the business...oh well.

Anyway, more to the point. I use both dial-up and DSL. My comp is dial-up and my brothers is DSL (at work it's a T1) Dial-up sucks as most of you already said. But if I had a choice I'd probably choose DSL. Even though it's relatively slower than Cable, you don't share bandwidth with everyone else...that, I think, makes up for the lack of speed.

Have fibre optic right to the house next door to me although they only use it for television which is quite dissapointing. We've had ADSL made available though so the connection is quite practicle and the speed isn't too bad
