View Full Version : Dad's religion
I don't know exactly where this thread should go, but Anything goes sounded good. For the past few years, my Dad has been on my case for not being a christian. I used to be, until someone asked me about 6 yrs. ago why i was a christian, my only explanation: My parents told me to. So I made my own decision, i realized that I didn't really believe in it, but i still get sh!t for it. What is the best thing i could say to my dad to get him off my case but still show him respect?
Religion is faith. You can't make someone have faith. If he want's you to find out who you are, he needs to give you the space to find out for yourself.
Tell him just that. That you respect his views, but you don't shre them. It doesn't change who you are, just what you believe. I grew up a christian, and was miserable. The church I went to spent the entire time telling us what we couldn't do, and what we HAD to do. Sorry, not for me. I believe what I believe, and that's that.
Good luck darlin', and let us know how you made out.

haha i rember when your dad asked me if i care about life. your dad is kinda one of a kind but just be gald you have a father that cares about you in some way hes trying to teach you but dosn't know how and as some older people think that if you don't follow god your evil and other carzy things, your dad isn't that bad of a person he just has difernt views and think that every oone should follow them ;) your dad is still scary!!!!!
yeah, that's my dad, believe what he believes or your a worthless person in society, but yeah, he is still here for me. He has alot more better qualities than my stepdad.

Baby girl, my parents each had their religion. So, I went to catholic school during the week (momma's) and church on sunday with my daddy. ***SO CONFUSED***
When I was in the Army, my "MOS" was a "71M". That means I was a "chaplains Asst.". Boy, did I ever learn all about different religions. I do know that being a believer of a higher power is not so bad. In fact, it does give me comfort but I am digressing. I feel by being exposed to the different faiths most everyone has the same goal. ;)
I am not going to say anymore because we all have differences and I don't like to make anyone feel uncomfortable.
Just tell him your stance. Be educated about it. Suggest reasons and cite things such as, "I'm just curious, besides, Christianity came to be in what, 47 A.D.? Well, what did the people before then do? They weren't Christians. Did they go to hell?" Pose questions. Ask away. Make him think about his religion like he's never had to before.
The people around these parts (the Bible Belt) are very aggressive in pawning off their religion on others. I've been through instances like this so many times before it's not even funny. I've seen people weep after I told them that I wasn't a Christian. They looked like I had just kicked each of their children and screamed "HAIL SATAN, MOTHERFUCKER!" at the top of my lungs. It's almost absurd. I expect people to have the common courtesy NOT to preach to me about what I'm doing right and wrong and why I'm going to hell. I don't force my beliefs onto others, and I want to be treated the same.
The main failure of people who argue against organized religion is that they often fail to recognize the opposition. They don't take into consideration the fact that followers of most conventional religions are there for a reason...that religion works for many people. My grandmother's ex-husband went to Pepperdine University and got a degree in theology, it was interesting listening to him tell stories about his days in priesthood and his story of his skepticism and renunciation of faith. A lot of the most interesting people that I've ever met were moderately or intensely religious, and they managed to suppress their desire to shout to the high hills about their beliefs...

Quick question thou Jake D., do you feel or have some type of faith in what? A rock, or a lake or some type of higher power??
/me just wonders if anyone feels that something is watching over them???
I have faith in something, Red. As for what, I don't know. I just know that there's a very good possibility that there is something greater than us...as to what, I don't know. I've been in many situations where something had to have been watching over me or maybe it was sheer luck or fate....but I've managed to avoid a lot of physical harm.
one thing about me is that i want to know allllllllll, or at least as much as possible. According to christianity, the bible says you are not supposed to learn about other religions. I like reading, i like finding out about different people's viewpoints, why they have them, and respect that they have their own opinion. And if i ask my dad those questions, which i have, he says i'm ignorant, and that just gets something else started. I want to be able to say something to appease him, but still stand up for myself and not cave in. I also want to learn about as many theories as possible, be christian, buddhism, dao, qabbalah (one of its many spellings), or what have you, w/out being frowned upon.
Fuck all of that noise. Your father sounds slightly hypocritical. Calling you ignorant for asking questions? Maybe he doesn't know the answers himself and is dodging the point.
By the by, there's a book called The Story of B by Daniel Quinn. Pick it up and give it a read. You might like it.
