View Full Version : What Do You Have....
What book are you reading/or just finished reading?
What music are you listening to right now? Or what was the last CD?
What was the last thing that you watched on TV?
This writer has terrific wit as well as great storytelling abilities. When a friend first suggested it I was some what put off by the title. Over all it was very entertaining.
Another trilogy that may interest those here are the books "Griffin and Sabine" "Sabine's Notebook" and "The Golden Mean" - Bantock. Very interesting format.
I'm listening to the water flow through the aerater in my aquarium.
The last thing I watched that got my attention was Mike Wallace's piece on Sixty Minutes last night. He interviewed a number of arabs ( specifically Kuwaitis ) on the subject of U.S. foreign policy. Most don't want us in Afghanistan and they don't want us to aid Israel. I need some reference as to the formation of Israel to get a better understanding of their arguement.

What's the plot of the trilogy, Usantic? The Golden Mean sounds familiar. I have to say, though, just hearing the title of the "Sequinned Love Nun" is about as much encouragement as I would need...
The President of Indonesia is now publicly stating his belief that an extension of Operation Enduring Freedom to an offensive against Iraq would be "a war on Islam, not terrorism". This makes sense, however unwelcome it may be: the Islamic leaders are generally following the old Fabian stratagem of "Talking Left; Acting Right" to ensure their own supporters follow the Government line - suggesting that they will refuse to support the Coalition if it launches ground assaults on nations Bush et al haven't the slightest interest or intention in starting...
(1) The Odyssey. To my shame, I'd never previously read it: I'm normally fine with the classics, but I loathed the idea of hexameter. I was completely wrong, as those of you who've read it will already know; it's remarkably good, full of accessible descriptions, flowing verse, and some excellent characterizations, plot development etc. I'm about half-way through at the moment, and in no hurry to reach the concluding books.
(2) Sleeper, The It Girl. Ah, those were the days...
(3) I'd like to say something intelligent, like Usantic, but I fear that my last recollection of television was either Dick Van Dyke pratfalling through a hospital ward/repairing a sink in "Diagnosis Murder", or Tony Danza failing to save the life of a convicted felon in "Family Law"....I'm so sorry, but, vacuous as it undoubtedly is, I need the occasional vicarious fix of pratfalling/pretty people/glossy, vapid melodrama.
Incidentally, the Nazi Party invented daytime television as we know it. Makes you think, doesn't it? Next time you watch a five-minute cookery segment with the Galloping Gourmet it's worth remembering that the original format of that broadcast probably featured Albert Speer and Joachim von Ribbentrop demonstrating the racial purity of egg-and-lentil sandwiches....
I just finished "The Cheese Monkeys" by Chipp Kidd. I bought the book without so much as reading the "blurb" on the back. If anyone else has seen this book, they will know why it is so fascinating. Oh, and the story is good too.
As soon as I finish playing around in here, I'm going to start a book recommended by Hallo - I can't seem to call him by his Trix name! called "House of Leaves."
Music. Gawd. It changes so radically depending on my mood! The last cd I bought was Rob Zombie's Sinister Urge, the one I'm listening to now is a compilation of Thrice MP3s.
The last thing I watched on t.v. was the channel 5 (KTLA) morning news.
Hey Amaurote, I love Sleeper!

My bad. It was Roach who recommended my next read, not Moriarty.
Hi Liciferschild. ummm, System of a Down. =)

Berly: The Roach's influence transcends strictly demarcated webspace - I've ordered The Roaches Have No King on the strength of his early posts to Akpcep, which, considering my general boredom with contemporary fiction, is testimony to the massive respect I have for his intellect.
Sleeper - ah, yes, those were the days...Louise Wener's mellifluous yet minatory vocals to "Nice Guy Eddie" and "Statuesque" drifting insouciantly over Arcadian gardens and palaces of light, and every dream was realized. That's the way I remember it, anyway; then again, I seem to remember the 1984 Presidential elections being won by Gary Coleman from Diff'rent Strokes.
Diva, the kids are adorable. I'm glad you brought him home. I hope things work out for you. :(
Am, I've read "The Roaches Have No King". I think you will like it. I too have a little cushy place here in my heart for the Roach. He and Holl...er...Moriarty have opinions I trust. I think I trust yours too, it just takes me a while to put it together - with the research and all. *wink*

Thanks, Berly; it sounds a beautifully perverse novel, and I'm waiting on tenterhooks for it at the moment: Numbers is the central cockroach character, and he sounds a little like one of the evil rabbits from "Watership Down"...
I'd also like to offer my profuse and sincere gratitude to Berly and Aussie for subtly modifying Moriarty's "Hollowearth" sobriquet over the last few weeks, and thereby providing me with valuable, nay priceless ammunition to use against him every time he posts: I'm currently referring to him as "Hallowed Earth", but "Hollow Ear" and "Hollow Arse" are also highly prized in my very small and grubby world...having said that, I was frequently referred to as "Amaroute" on both Akpcep and Mono, which term, as I understand it, is either
(1) A minor public highway in eastern Armenia.
(2) A scientifically inferior unidirectional wireless system, as alluded to in the sentence "Another reason for AMRoute ineffectiveness is its dependency on the underlying unicast protocol."
I'm not guiltless myself, mind; I used to greet one of my colleagues at university with "Hi, Dave; how's it going?"; he never seemed pleased; I was utterly dismayed at his response, and left wondering what social code I'd broken.
Now I know. His name was Kevin.
oh oh oh, the "Watership Down", yes - I have read that as well and I'm not going to comment any further on the "Roaches" until after you've read it.
so·bri·quet (sbr-k, -kt, sbr-k, kt) also sou·bri·quet (sbr-k, -kt, sbr-k, -kt)
n.
An affectionate or humorous nickname.
An assumed name.
Yes, I had to look it up. Glad to be of service Am. I can confidently say that I will often mangle a sobriquet (wooo hoo, look ma!), idea or spelling of a word. Trust me, it's part of my charm. :D
