View Full Version : Shalom, Mr President
Lieberman enters the race for Presidency (http://www.msnbc.com/news/856649.asp?0na=x2101210-). My first reaction was "Yes!" I thought he was a great guy with some wonderful ideas to offer our country. The reality is that in America there's this strong religious prejudice and the reality of a Jew in the White House is the same as a woman or a black. I don't care that he's a Jew. I was so worried that the Democrats would have nothing to offer that I like this year. I don't consider myself a Democrat, persay. I usually vote for who ever I feel is best for the job. I know people think that voting along party lines is best, but I think our system is in need of a complete overhaul. The politicians are so obsessed with 'winning one for their team' that they aren't doing what is best for the country. I don't know if Bush with win another term. I know that I'll be in a corner, balling my eyes out if he does. I love my country and hate to see it this way. People around me are ashamed. That's the first time I ever saw Americans ashamed of their country. 2004, folks. Stop the killing.

Yes, it's going to be very intersting. I did post some days ago that if Bush failed a second term, then USA could have it's first Jewish president.
It would be interesting to hear if people think, due to Middle East crisis if that would be an advantage or detrimental to a peace process.
I have great concern, that all Arab states would see a Jewish President as a threat.
So Diva why you say "yes"?
Shalom.
I really like Senator Lieberman. He's a good man and has some good ideas. He makes a point of going into business establishments where he is senator and talking with the townfolk, listening to what their concerns, issues, etc... are. And no, I don't care what his religious background is. :)

Well you may be slightly baised? But what you say is correct.
Already, he is doing what he can on a personal level. When he is in Washington DC, he has been lingering after Sabbath services at Kesher Israel, his synagogue in Georgetown. (Known informally as Kesher, the synagogue is home to a host of low-key, but important, political activists and attendees such as Leon Wieseltier, the literary editor of the New Republic, Daniel Benjamin, a terrorism expert and the author of The Age of Sacred Terror, and Alfred Moses, a Clinton Administration ambassador to Romania.)
Rather than rushing out of synagogue to make the rest of the 1.5 mile trek back to his home -- observant Jews don't ride in cars on the Sabbath -- Lieberman, always friendly, has been making a special effort to take time after Saturday services and schmooze with regulars. "He was definitely hanging around the Kiddush [a small meal after services] for longer than usual," one worshipper reports. "He's been chatting with everyone -- much longer than before."
Biased how? Religion-wise? Really, religion doesn't matter to me at all. I don't see why people think it's such a big deal. I would hope that any President wouldn't run our country based on their religion.

Well.....
For Orthodox Jews, Lieberman wasn't pro-Israel enough. For extreme anti-Israel critics, he was too pro-Israel. This is only a taste of what Lieberman has in store for him in a presidential run.
This is exactly what is wrong with politics. They don't care about Bush's religion, why should they give a hoot about Lieberman's? It's his ideas and what he is offering the country that matters.

True and brilliant point Diva. But based on that who cares what religion or colour anyone is, but racism and anti-semitism exists.
However, in this case, people would suspect (and rightly) that Lieberman would have some bias to-wards Israel, and this would therefore surely worry Arab states. It's not what A 'Jewish' president would offer USA that worries the Arabs, but what he may offer Israel.
Now, which would you prefer a Jewish President or a Muslim one? And which one would you feel Israel in the safer hands of?
Well, I don't see him travelling to Arab countries, that's for sure. I am hoping that he will be impartial, although the general consensus is pro Israel in America.
I think Israel is more religious and so I would have to say jewish.

Why? As President or president 'possible' he must travel impartially to all countries to listen and understand.
Anyway, I think he just returned from Middle East, I will check and post more later.
I know that there are extremists all over the world. But I think that religious fanatics are going to have some biased opinion about a President who is Jewish. I guess there wouldn't be any more of a threat in an Arab country as in America.
What is your opinion?

Tough one Diva.
Of course the honest rational part of me would say, that his religion/colour doesn't matter, it's his past record that counts, but I suspect I would have my suspicions. Hence I guess the Arab states would feel very nervous.
The big difference is that I would give the person a chance, and then watch carefully his actions. I also believe any sensible person in a high position understands he is under constant scrutiny.
Unfortunately the Arabs/Muslims have such a deep hate for Jews/Americans, that they could not forget their own propoganda bullshit, condeming this person before he had a chance to to anything.
Any anything he did do would be condemed immediately.

People don't seem to want to take the effort to really get to know the candidates. It's must easier to base your judgement off of party lines, or even religion/race/sex rather than ideology, methodology, etc. etc. Sadly most voters are lazy.

True Kittyroze, but that's just human nature. We tend to judge people on how cthey look, dress and position themselves, rather than getting to know them.
How often have you heard ? "Love at first sight." Well no one can love or condem at first sight.
kitty, you are so right. Our politicians have gone from standing behind their convictions to trying to sling the most mud in order to hide their own flaws. Voters have tuned up the political parties, which means when they have something important to get across it's lost with all the bullshit.

Try being in a country with 5 official parties. You think 2 is bad... During election time, the mud-slinging going on in Canada is amazing. By the time that election day comes around, not even the most astute voters give a shit who's running. For the last ten years, we've had a government who, after their first term, just went about business as usual, and have generally been fucking things up. Unfortunately, they're the best option that we have at this time. Hopefully with a leadership race coming up for the Liberal party, a new leader may bring some new life into our government.
Christ... I think I may run in the next federal election...
