View Full Version : Trying New Things

Recently, I've made a point of trying new things. These have ranged from University affiliated stuff such as Judo, Aikido, Zhuan Shu Kuan, Fencing, Flying (My RAF application was regurgitated because I had asthma as a wee lad, apparently), learning German and canoeing, to others personally motivated. But only a few of them have proven to be worth continuing and I'm looking for new things to enrich my life with.
Any ideas?
Anyone know of anything good to do in Glasgow that I might miss? (Gladiator?)
Anything that you tried once that changed your life??

Things that require a team effort are wonderfully enriching...I've made a point of joining organizations that do a lot of charity work...if you haven't done that I would definitely recommend it.
I haven't tried too many things just once...if it made that big of an impact, I like to stick with it.
No more canoeing! I volunteered for a nursing home and I used to stay after work and spend time with patients in the hospital at my old department. I think charity work is a great idea. You'd be amazed at the things you learn.

If you need ANY charity ideas, it has been my job for the past three years to go to conferences and share ideas with students in the US/Canada...SO, I got tons of suggestions, especially if you're in a group living environment. :)
I would also recommend taking up cooking as a hobby. It's fun to go to a different friend's house each Sunday (in a large group of course) and try out new/weird/gourmet recipes.
Dance, horseback riding, gardening (even just buy a house plant...then name it--I have a lovely cactus named Norman), try playing an instrument, and long walks around the city/town are a great way to figure out what's going on--read the public boards.
Whilst in Glasgow Vil,,,go and find the MacIntosh museum there. This fellow started the craftsman style and had some great designs. I purchased a couple of container loads from the school he attended there. Apparently it was scheduled for demolition, but I never got word if it was taken down. If you don't mind checking into that I would be very appreciative. It may spur you into woodworking.
Listen to the Simple Minds? :)
Even better: learn to play the 'bodhran'
I admire anyone who can ski. I tried once and it almost killed me. One old girlfriend talked me into going skiing with her. Since I had never done it before I snuck out of our cabin real early and tried to teach myself. After several unsuccessful attempts I finally got the hang of it, kind of. I went down this hill like a drunk man and realized i didn't know how to stop these things. I ended up over a small cliff. I broke my leg and was found by some real skiers. She thought it was cute. What men won't do to impress the ladies...
Skiing is nice, both down and cross country..and boarding too..
But to anyone who hasnt tried scuba diving i say: "DO IT!!"

I still want to learn Spanish. And maybe "go out." Oh, and do my mirror art. Now they sell mirror art and I used to sit in the basement breaking mirrors to do art and my parents thought I was crazy so they got pissed. Now they sell it like chimes. Well, I wanted to paint one wall in my room black and glue the broken mirrors on it in shapes and then maybe do a splash of color. But, no....So, I gave up.?
How many of these sports have you done? Did you join any sports at uni?
