its going to take a lot of restraint to keep myself from shoving the shiny ribbon down the throat of the next smiling face i see.

people seem to have this belief that they can throw a ribbon on their body and go about their business - shopping, restauranting, etc. and they are 'doing something'. i wear a ribbon, i show support.

actually what you (i mean this as the genearl you of the world and not the reader) show is that you were able to put a ribbon on your body. period. you dont accomplish a damn thing other than making YOURSELF feel better.

i hated this during dessert storm and i hate it just as much now, even though i no longer have a family member in the military.

for those who have lost/will lose someone because of the attack and ensuing military actions - your wearing a ribbon doesnt DO anything. it doesnt help get answers, doesnt provide comfort, doesnt address teh day-to-day life concerns esp. if children are involved. it's a pointless bandwagon that mindless masses jump on akin to finding the church only at christmas or love only on valentines.

wearing a ribbon doesnt make you caring/committed citizen anymore than once a year forgiveness makes you a saint.

Maybe I was being cynical here with my reply. The fact is that alot of people don't want to ever forget what has happened and the only way they can show an emotion is through this means. It doe's not demean the situation here! it just means that they care alot. We all can't be strong in time's like these; so for sake of a flamewar let them have their moment doing what they think best. No offence NewEngland, but grief affects us all in different ways. Lets all be United in this cause!

if someone feels so moved to as to do something - then let them do something useful or something that makes sense

wearing a ribbon just doesnt accomplish anything

Hey chickeeta... Here's my spin on this. I live in California. If I could I would go there and start digging. But I can't. I give money, but that just didn't feel like I did anything. I still felt horrible. Then I put a silly ribbon on, and looked at it. I felt like I was connected. Like I was showing my respect. Showing that they didn't win. They didn't break American Pride.

Maybe the symbol of the ribbon is for rememberance, a kind of feel good factor for the people that wear them. Most people will feel an immense guilt that they did'nt suffer so the ribbon give's them a get out of jail free card. They are not being cynical wearing it NewEngland! they are just dealing with it in their own way. Don't let a fucking ribbon bug you! Ignore it as you would any other piece of shite merchandise that capitalise's on the misery of the tax paying population.
