Will We Ever Learn... To Stop Asking That?
You never know when your time is up. The American journalist is dead. He knew the risks. Then again, how many people consciously enter a plane weighing their chance of survival should they crash? Have you ever sat by the window in an airplane and it was stuck? Did it get you thinking, "What else isn't working?" Or did you just fuss until the stewardess reached over and popped it up with ease? If they forget to put the light bulb in the overhead light... Could they have forgotten to put in that last bolt? The two words that scare me are "It's fine." Mostly because it was preceded by questioning the quality or functionality of something. Yet we move on, blinders in place, looking for our 'happy place'. Is there something this reporter could have done to prepare for the possibility of an attack/kidnapping? Probably. Did he? No. I guess the part of this horrible tragedy [for the wife/child to be] is that the interview was only filler reports. They'll say that he was doing what he loved. They'll say he died for the truth. That he's a hero. Bullshit. When the day ends and he comes home. When he greets his wife and sits down to a good meal. When he kicks off his shoes and watches Television. This is his life. Reporting was his career. Hero? Why? Because he died? He was a good man. A family man. He didn't save babies from burning buildings or find a cure for cancer. His death is tragic in what is left behind. His death is tragic in that he suffered. Those terrorists did not kill a hero. They killed a friend. A brother. A son. A nephew. A husband. A father. A hero is defined by an act of courage. A man is defined by how he lived his life. And now the worst part... He becomes a statistic
