The Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at then-President George W. Bush was convicted Thursday of assaulting a foreign leader and sentenced to three years in prison, lawyers said. He defiantly shouted "long live Iraq" when the sentence was read.

He got the minimum sentence and can appeal. Under the circumstances I think it's fair, although for Iraq's future I was hoping he'd get time served. On one hand he was making a statement for a country that Bush helped destroy. On the other... he DID break the law. It's a tough call.

It's sad that Bush walked away without so much as a mark on his face for all the death and destruction that he caused. I don't think that administration will ever truly get what they deserve. A bad mark in the history books doesn't amount to squat.

I can't say I would've mourned much if Bush had actually been hurt (or even hit) by the shoe in question. I might also admire the courage of the guy who did it - or at least have some understanding of the feelings behind it. But as for the consequences, I must say I'm happily surprised his sentence wasn't tougher, since the new Iraq has a need to mark that world leaders needs to be able to feel secure, at least at a press conference, when visiting the country.

That long dead mathematician getting a bill is hilarious and a reminder how retarded people can be.

Same here. I mean, personal feelings aside, you can't just go "sure, you can throw objects at foreign dignitaries at will, in an attempt to assault them", even if it is an odd or potentially amusing situation.

After all, that shoe could have been lethal. This was the man nearly felled by a pretzel, after all.

Sadly, that is an astute comment, since the human race, in general, is keenly adroit at avoiding the history books altogether and thus making the same bloody mistakes over and over again!
_______________

And in a twist, let's not overlook "Hollywood" and its stubborn, inane penchant for turning great films into disappointing remakes and endless sequels, while hundreds of quality novels and short stories gather cobwebs awaiting their chance before the cameras. (Ah, but that is another rant.)

Yes, it is. I am reminded of the time I received a letter addressed to my father. It was a sales pitch to purchase a burial plot— in the same cemetery that my father had been "resting" in for the past twenty years! On the bottom of the letter I wrote:
"Why not ask Mr.______ __ _____ in person. He is about 112 yds. from your office window— in lot #65." And mailed it to the cemetery office.
I never got a response.

Yes, Virginia, there is an Afterlife— it's called a mailing list!

Too right, mate. The only thing sure in history is that it repeats itself. Not because people doesn't learn. They just doesn't care.
