The Tax Poem <o></o>

<o></o>

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most
prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the
world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What in the hell happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'
And I still have to 'press 1' for English !?!?!?!?

I hope this goes around THE USA at least 100 times

Er, no, typical right-wing pseudohistory, Bass, I'm surprised a good liberal like you would fall for it: while the US was growing rapidly, you weren't the most prosperous nation in the world in 1909 (hello, evil British Empire and Evil Imperialist France and Germany), you had several billion dollars of debt from the Civil War, and you had plenty of poll taxes and corporate taxes even back then...the US army that conquered Mexico and the US navy that sank Spain was not funded from charity-boxes. And with a state that pitifully sized, you had serious problems with organized crime and no social services to protect the weak, so when your presidents weren't being shot by anarchists, your rich were busy machine-gunning trade unionists because they dared to affiliate near their workplace. I'm sorry, but fuck the Golden Years myth right up the rectum - we live in more enlightened times, recession or no recession.

Bassmama, I can see the point.

However, check it from another point of view: Sweden had (and has) the highest tax pressure in the world. BY FAR worse than you do. We pay 30% of our income every month. If we reach a certain amount of annual income, we can be made to pay over 50%. Add other taxes to that. VATs, luxury taxes, gift taxes, fortune taxes, winning taxes and so on.

Still we were concidered the most prosperous land in the world well into the 1990's.

Our right wing government has taken many taxes away, and we're down to 20th place somewhere in prosperity.

So, does high or low taxes make for bad or good living? No. Because, as we learn at school: correspondence does not necessitate a causal coherence - just because two things are true, it doesn't mean that one is caused by the other. There are many others things that decide a country's prosperity.

That's my opinion on it, anyway.

THOUGH, I see your point and it's a funny text. As always, seeing a post from Bassmama always brightens my day.

In fact, in Sweden taxes are so high there's no translation for "ebay". Seriously.

More than anything, it's been a real eye-opener this morning seeing the results of the House division on President Obama's fiscal stimulus plan, which of course will lead to higher taxes at the expense of reflating the economy. The US has an enviably dynamic economy, so it should be common sense. But no, the Republicans think a fiscal stimulus can take the form of massive tax cuts, just like Mrs Thatcher did in the early '80s. Of course, what do people do when they receive massive tax cuts? They save. Saving can clearly be good for the economy if enough people are doing it in the long-term, but reducing aggregate demand in the short-term is the very last thing you want to do when your economy is flat-lining. The British manufacturing sector was ruined in 1981 by a Chicago Boys-style Budget that did just that, but the Right can't seem to forget that 80's myth of small taxes, small Government (which only ever existed in its head).

I hope Bass doesn't feel like she's the one being yelled at. But for Europeans this is a big thing. We actually fought and died to be able to have high taxes, believe it or not. ;)
