Major flaw revealed in Internet Explorer; users urged to switchTue Dec 16, 2008 11:49AM EST

The major press outlets are abuzz this morning with news of a major new security flaw that affects all versions of Internet Explorer (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=ArOfqpN4GVMq8UYJ4sVqTkcxLpA5/SIG=11mmo26fo/**http%3A//news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7784908.stm)from IE5 to the latest beta of IE8. The attack has serious and far-reaching ramifications -- and they're not just theoretical attacks. In fact, the flaw is already in wide use as a tool to steal online game passwords, with some 10,000 websites infected with the code needed to take advantage of the hole in IE.
Virtually all security experts (as well as myself) are counseling users to switch to any other web browser -- none of the others are affected, including Firefox, Chrome, and Opera -- at least for the time being, though Microsoft has stubbornly said it "cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw." Microsoft adds that it is working on a fix but has offered no ETA on when that might happen. Meanwhile it offers some suggestions for a temporary patch, including setting your Internet security zone settings to "high" and offering some complicated workarounds (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AudlPxbl0338ubJf5or44YMxLpA5/SIG=12350hcgd/**http%3A//www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/961051.mspx). (Some reports state, however, that the fixes do not actually work (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AmV3VU5XUseAWJZL5V9.Jx8xLpA5/SIG=12tekfvtv/**http%3A//voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/12/microsoft_big_security_hole_in.html).)
Expedient patching or switching are essential. Security pros fear that the attack will soon spread beyond the theft of gaming passwords and into more criminal arenas, as the malicious code can be placed on any website and can be adapted to steal any password stored or entered using the browser. It's now down to the issue of time: Will Microsoft repair the problem and distribute a patch quickly enough to head off the tsunami of fraud that's about to hit or will it come too late to do any good?
Meanwhile, I'll reiterate my recommendation: Switch from Internet Explorer as soon as you can. You can always switch back once the threat is eliminated.

Cut and paste from IE to a document the http address. That way you have a back-up document saved at all times of addresses you care about. You should be ok doing that now and don't log in to the sites so you are safe as far as the threat talked about. Doing it right now is better than waiting.

Fortunately for me, I only use Firefox. Hate IE with a passion since it screws up so much. Most sites are Firefox friendly. And the ad blockers for Firefox are a comfort to me.

I always use Firefox. I've never liked IE very much.

you don't have to load the page to get the address, just right click on the favourite in the favourites list and select "Properties".

Thank you!

I opened Firefox a few minutes ago & started going through all the buttons & clicked on 'BOOKMARKS' & VOILA!!!! It was all there.

I've never had problems w/IE until very lately it's started occaisionally farting a message at me that I didn't understand & my son said not to worry about it- just use Firefox. So, here I am on Firefox & so far I like it- 'specially since it seems to be faster loading & once I understand it better, I KNOW I'll like it! And I think I'll back up everything anyway.

Don't people have anything better to do than be pains in my (internets) ass?

Wow, do people still use IE? I thought it was long reduced to being just one more of those funny icons that people instantly erase from the desktop of their new computer.

Surprising you would say that considering it is common knowledge that MS products are the standard in the computing realm Even Apple, Liniux, etc, et al can't break the hold MS has worldwide.

The reason just as you said. It is packed in as the only easily accessible browser on all new PC's at this point. Same as Windows Vista is loaded on all New PC's.

There are alternatives but the general public don't wanna be bothered with it. "It's there and I will use it". Hell I am using it now.

I use both Firefox and IE as there are things that Firefox just can't do.

You can also use Google's new Chrome. But it will leave you feeling like you are missing something even though you can't quite place what it might be. Oh and then there is Netscape with AoHell.

Not defending MS just stating what really -IS- the obvious.
