I have finally decided to get cable. Now for the choices. I am told that I have to go with the Cable company in my area (Time-Warner) or get Direct TV. Does anyone have a preference on either one? Which is better/worse and why?

Isn't Direct TV satellite?

I had Time Warner upstate & they were great- dependable, reliable..... and RoadRunner KICKED ASS! I have OptOnLine now & don't like it as much.

Can't help you there. i don't have a TV. And I wouldn't know how your system works if I did. Sorry.

Thaum, I have a 43 inch TV that has collected dust because I haven't found a movie worth watching (except for Stardust which was awesome). Jake has used it more for video games than anything. The silly part is that I am more interested in the Daily Show or Colbert Report to see (watching snippits online only goes so far) than most television shows or news reports. The movie channels usually blow but I would love to have the option to check out a show that everyone is raving about if just to be in touch. News will most likely still be from online as the media is pure sensationalism and sweeps week oriented. It's sad when you get more informed news from outside of your own country.

Well we have Direct TV here as our only Cable Option is ComCast and it is almost 40% more expensive. We currently have the Starz, HBO, and Showtime movie channels. But we are dropping Starz and HBO as of this month.

Gotta keep Showtime for my Weekly Fix of Dexter though.

The choice 150 channels and Showtime will cost us $80 per month. the equivalent with Comcast is $120.

I have Digital Cable here in the Midwest. Good picture, lots of pay and non pay movie channels. I Started with basic cable, CH 1-60 Years ago, now I almost never go below CH 60 except to watch football. All the science, History type shows I like, are in the upper channel's. Check the different levels of service they have. I also get my internet service with them.
Like you I NEVER get my news from the TV...Same thing everyday...Crap!

Me too!

Okay, I am lost with this Cable VS Direct TV shit. I have to see what each one actually offers and doing it while at work wasn't helpful. Direct TV says they can put the dish on the roof, so that shouldn't be a problem. I just have to figure out the prices VS what you get VS what I want. :P

I'm stuck with Charter Communications. I looked into Comcast when I found out they do service this area...but because our apartment is serviced by Charter, we cannot use Comcast. SUCH A LOAD OF BULLSHIT, how can I not have the option of moving to a competitor??????

We had Dish Network, and we LOVED it. We were going to get it here when we moved in but the way our apartment is wired, they'd have to run a cable through our dryer vent, through our kitchen and living room to the tv. Plus then we'd have to have Charter anyways for high speed internet.

So now, as long as we live here, we're stuck with Charter and we hate that company sooooooooooo bad. I've had more than my share of issues with them but hey, what can ya do.

we had satellitle in old house but at new house got time warner-- and have a HD TV so when connected via a HDMI cable have 16:9 tv on their "free" HD channels-- have the DVR--which is GREAT-- we are recording movies off Encore and then dubbing them off to our new DVD recorder and can watch whenever-- as the DVR will only keep 60 movies on it and we have some tv shows set to record weekly--which without any instructions my wife and i figured out how to use the DVR and now love it-- but as far as cable internet--that sucks in first 2 weeks we lost it so much it was practicially usless-- after 3 techs and 2 different routers we finally cancelled it -- and actually get wireless from neighbours-- because of all the problems we get encore from free for a year-- but don't know now that we cancelled internet, if we will lose that

satellite tv, if it rains you will lose it-- if a bird passes gas near the dish --you willl lose it-- and also depending on if you get local or they are available, you may not have local channels on it--
either way good luck

I prefer sattelite. I have experienced and dealt with too many cable problems (Charter, around here). I had both, Dish and DirectTV. Really, no difference between them. If it is raining, then yes, you will have problems. Cable, on average, has been much more expensive, especially if you don't bundle with their other shit.

Check if Verizon is getting FIOS to your area, that would be the BEST option. (sweet sweet fiber...). Otherwise.. I'd go with Sat over Cable.

Pos is right. I WISH I could get FIOS- I'd dump Cablevision/optonline faster than it took to type the names. And you might like Satellite, being in LA with all that sun. When I had it upstate, I'd have to go out & clean off the dish everytime it snowed- more than 1/2 would knock it out.

Even if you "bundle" the cabel w/other services, the price jacks up after a year. At least, OptOnLine did. Fuckers.

I had Time Warner in Austin, and I loved it. We also had Roadrunner internet through the same company. It was awesome. Fuck Direct TV in its asshole.

Diva, I definately get the Colbert and Daily show. :) And if you have a good TV you want to use it, makes sense. So nothing to argue there. :)

We have Time Warner down here...so far cable and internet are awesome! I lot better than direct tv in my opinion.
