Today is the birthday of great B.B. King. September 16 in 1925, which makes him 83 years old and one of the senior bluesmen alive.
Riley B. King is not only one of the seniors, he's arguably one of the most influental.
On a much loved live recording by several blues legends, Jimmie Vaughan introduced the song crossfire with these words:
"Without this next guy...there wouldn't be any electric blues as we know it...today. It wouldn't even be close because we're all trying to sound like him and still are, every one of us. So put your hands together for the great, the one and only, B. B. King!"
And it pretty much sums it up. The man is a legend, hell, even his guitar, Lucille, is a legend. At age 80 he announced his retirement - though he makes surprise performances every now and then -, and I hope the guy lives another while. He's put in some life's work and deserve a pleasant few years.
So happy cake'n'booze day, big man. You're one of the true heroes!
