View Full Version : That Would Have Been.... Messy

In front of my apartment is a huge row of trees that took the place of the fence when the drunk driver drove through it some years back. That's a mouthful. Anyways... I was walking in front of said trees when a guy comes whipping around the corner on his bike. There were screeching tires and wide eyed expressions from the both of us. Then the bus drove by. He continued on his way and I realized how close one of us came to being flung into the street. He brushed it off as a no harm/no foul sort of thing. It's amazing this guy lasted as long as he did without killing himself or someone else. Besides the whole 'you should be riding the bike in the street, fuckwad' debate I just can't understand how someone can tear around the corner where people are ALWAYS walking at that time (I've seen him on numerous occasions) without the slightest hesitance. I'm going to start carrying a stick with me. He keeps it up, I'm flinging it into the spokes. Idiot...

Yeah, I don't get the "bike on the sidewalk" thing, which is a glaring example of the disparity between "idiot on a bike" and "cyclist" - cyclists stick to a certain standard of behavior whereas idiot on a bike doesn't pay any attention whatsoever to anything.

The only time you'll catch me on the sidewalk is on streets where traffic/conditions are way too precarious or there's a designated bike lane available. Otherwise, the street is just way faster and less annoying, and I'm speaking as both a cyclist and a pedestrian.

Fuck the helmetless morons that don't obey traffic laws or have any respect for others.

*High fives Jake*

I ride my bike everywhere I go. The only time I'm on the sidewalk is when I have to go down 410. I'm not riding my bike on the highway. Don't care to get run over.

The funny thing is that if you ride on the sidewalk, people give you shit for it, if you ride on the road, drivers give you shit for it.

It's good that gas prices are going up, maybe some of those fatassed drivers will start cycling instead of driving to McDonalds.

You know, while I don't ride a bicycle, this same general thought was going through my mind. There's no "good" place for cyclists to ride safely, really. Some places have bicycle lanes, but most places don't. I hate coming up on a cyclist on the road (while driving my car) because I'm not always sure how to deal with the situation. *shrugs*

Yeah. Problem is I scream back and am more mobile, even though they can end me with a turn of the wheel.

Nah dude. That's when you go spider man on them and flip onto the hood of their car.

yes as a bicyclist i have had items (drinks, cigarettes ) thrown at me for being LEGALLY on the road-- i got into the habit of carring a shovel handle that was apinted black on the rack of my bike and pepper spray in my bag-- in case of idiots trying anything-- funny thing is once i had items with me i didn't seem to get bothered anymore
Diva proper way to pass a bicyclist is to pull around them like you would a car-- signal your intent to pass and pass --giving them at least half a lane-- as legally a biker can ride in the middle of the lane if they wanted--but that would really cause problems--
when i bike i try to stay right on the line or if has shoulder on that--but certain roads you must drive a little in lane as there is too much shit on edge of road that can damage your tires

We have the Silver Comet Trail which I used to go walking on.

http://www.silvercometga.com/

It's mostly paved and I've never been on the unpaved part, but it's just really quiet and calm. There are a lot of cyclers and for the most part, everyone uses common sense to move to one side of the path to let them pass. I used to take Daisy (my dog that my mother-in-law claims is hers...) and we'd go walking at least 5 miles on the weekends. That was sometimes difficult...her whole 15 pound self would feel the need to drag me. lol Fun times.
