View Full Version : Where does this go?

Hi. I feel some kind of introduction and explanation is needed, so here it is. Though I don't really use the user name anymore, I use to go by AEI. Nowadays I usually go by Gargantuan Orangutan or CultLeadr. Gargantuan Orangutan was too many letters to register here.

I sometimes read and comment in JakeD's blog, as well as Diva's blog. They don't know me very well and I probably don't know them that well. Though, JakeD has been a few places I've been (like Hotu and the defunct Gaudity). Virtually speaking, I've come to like them, though I'm definitely not a groupie or stalker - just a person that reads blogs sometimes.

I'm on various forums, but I'm looking for more of an all purpose forum that isn't too large. This one might work out. Right now I feel like I'm playing the "where does this post go" game. I don't completely understand the direction and intent of this forum, but I thought I'd sign up and figure that out as I'm here. It would seem that nowadays most forums are dying and being replaced by other kinds of people networks like Youtube and Facebook.

Hai2u!

I'm James, don't take anything I say seriously. (Except that <-) (and that <-)

I like to talk about stuff, and will many times make an inappropriate comment with a point in it somewhere.

I don't try to make a point. I just throw out random thoughts cause I'm a tard. But I have learned to use my mental tourettes to occasionally be amusing.

In the butt, Bob.

How goes, ex-sir AEI? I'm going to bump this over to the "Say Hello Whateva" forum, where it doth belong. I hope you like it here - it'll be cool to have ye aboard.

I have a question. Why is it that when I click on a profile I get this output:

CultLeadr, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Hey CultLeadr! I was wondering what happened to you. I miss your comments on my blog. *grins* It's good to see you here and I really look forward to posting with you. This is the right place for this post to go.

The forum was originally created after another forum I helped to admin was shut down. I opened this one up so I could talk to the people I liked, especially one gal named Jennafer, who passed away last year. James is also from the original forum. *smiles*

The intent of this forum is really just socializing. Here's the rundown (slightly out of order for complete explanation)

Shoutbox: I think only viewable to registered members.

NCT News: Board related posts. When something goes wrong, etc...

Suggestions for Our Forum: Members can make suggestions to improve the board here.

Tell Me About Yourself: A great place to start off for introductions..

Anything Goes: Random discussion.

Current Events: Topical threads about the news or historical issues.

Writers Corner: Place to share poems, short stories, etc... Most of them are our own. I only ask that if it's someone else's that proper credit be given.

Cool Links and Flash Zone: Share funny sites we find on the web.

The Only Thing PC is Your Computer: Jokes galore. Some are not for easily offended.

Photos and Cartoons: Photos/cartoons that you've found or even photos of yourself.

Daily Rants: Where I post my front page rants (usually different from my blog/not as personal).

Polls: Where I post the weekly polls.

Forums open to FULL Members (not viewed by non/new members unless I change status):
Members Only: Personal events you need to discuss/alert people to.

Daily Bitchfest: Bitch about something that pisses you off personally.

Let the Good Times Roll: When something great happens you want to share.

NSFW Photos: R/X Rated humorous photos (Not for random porn). Made it Only viewable to Members to cut down on the spam.

Members Gallery: Link at the top of page so you can share photos. I have anti hotlinking enabled, so it's just for the forum.

Arcade: Place to play games (unless you're Gharm... who needs to post more :rude: ).

I have a question. Why is it that when I click on a profile I get this output:

You should be able to now. I changed your status. You might have to refresh. I had to change a few permissions to try and block spammers from PMing members. Everything is set up by post count. I changed yours to full member so you can view the whole forum. Usually people have to post XX amount before viewing certain things. It's stupid that I have to do that... But ya know...

I'm always glad to answer any questions. And everyone here is really helpful. We've got a great group of people here. Lots of joking, ranting and fun. Oh yeah... and then there's Unfy. :whome:

I can't wait to post with you!

Welcome!

I guess there really ISN'T a 'point' to this site except to talk, find out about each other & everyone's views, agree to disagree, & know that we all care about what happens to each other.

Join in on the fun, discussion, ballbusting, tame arguements, etc. I'm sure you'll feel right to home, especially since you are aquainted w/Diva & JakeD already.

Oh, yeah- watch out for Unfy- he's our resident raincloud ready to piss on ANYBODY'S parade at a given notice. Just remember he's got no lightening.... Oh- & he LOVES having his balls busted!

Thanks! I've been fairly busy in the last month or so, but mostly I just go through phases where I'm reading stuff online and then I sometimes drop off to not at all. :P

Thanks for all the info on the forum. I didn't realize there where these other sections. Whoohoo.

That's different. Many forums are the opposite. They're either too impersonal or there's far too much flaming going on.

So from what I've read I'm liking this so far. :) I suppose now is a good time to dissapear! ;) j/k

Actually that's sort of happening - having a lot of ISP interrupts at the moment.

What kinda cult do you have? I run the Church of the Jesus Lizard. I was the only member till Iso said he would join. But I haven't seen him at any of the sacrifices.

Yeah, there are lots of fun places to go. I used to have it all open until I had some less than pleasant experiences and figured it was nicer for the people who were active members to be able to post openly than have a big forum where you had to worry about jerks. :) I call this place the mild side of the web because there really isn't any flaming. There are heated arguments but they get back on track pretty quickly. The age range is large enough to where it's something for everyone. I've had people ask me about the forum's purpose a lot. They say 'I don't get it' and I say 'just have fun!'.

/me ties CultLeadr to a chair ;)

No one has asked me that before. :o I don't have any official cult established. But I will sometimes go on online crusades, and try to rally people to my way of thinking. ;) I've noticed on many sites there is sometimes someone that acts as a real Cult Leader too. ;)

Diva: IMO, the general atmosphere of any site is often determined by the operator or the lack of one. Of course, the users are make up the rest, but a site without anyone leading it usually becomes a mess.

Welcome. I had a heated argument on another forum about this earlier this year in which someone else took the messianic and predictable "Facebook is the future, bulleting forums are the past" line. We all signed up to Facebook as a bet, and sure, it's impressive enough, but its real success is in bringing people who already know one another - or previously knew one another - closer together, and acting as a big filing cabinet or gaming station. It is absolutely hopeless at promoting anonymous debate in its millions of dead forums, and in fact its notification system is practically set up to ensure that while you'll be told fourteen times in a row that someone has posted nonsense on your mega/super/very big Wall, you'll rarely be told when someone has responded to one of your threads (largely because they almost never do). While social networking sites may get there eventually, they're so dominated by profile narcissism that they aren't conducive to real debate. It may change eventually, but I just don't see any evidence of that right now.

I haven't used Facebook. I just really have no one to get in touch with from the past (or what have you). I've used myspace briefly, but it's not really my cup of tea. I suppose it's great if you like leaving meaningless "yer hot" comments. I use Youtube, but insofar as debate it's not particuarly useful. That's kind of an understatement. ;)

I agree. I've seen forums where the owner just tossed it up for whomever and never participated. They either died from lack of enthusiasm (with said owner whining about how it is never busy) or became a hunting ground for whatever poor soul happens to sign up and ask a question.

I have both a MySpace and Facebook account. I think it's something fun for a moment, but certainly not in the same level as a forum. It's more chit chat and a detailed profile. I've seen some boards with great profile pages and would love to have that here. But I certainly don't see glitter-photos of puppies or sexy women with Thanks for the Add text as being the same as this.

I recently met up with a girl from Highschool because of MySpace (which I usually avoid like the plague). So I can't say it's totally bad. I also post comments to friends on Facebook and enjoy the little extras they have so I can't totally knock that one either. I just don't see them on the same level as a forum. Youtube? I have an account there but don't even measure that up with any of them. They've already got the spam of MySpace or Yahoo! 360 without the fanfare.

Youtube is useful if you like to make videos, which I do sometimes. That's about it. It's strange to see 5,000 comments on one video. Nobody reads the comments on previous pages because everyone knows the comments are crap. :D So what you end up getting is not a conversation at all, but more of an online bathroom with graffiti on the walls.

Bassmama
03-04-08, 03:07PM
Huh- if I want to read bathroom graffiti, I at LEAST want my drawers around my ankles & my ass on the shitter- there's just nothing intelligent, beyond the occaisional rhyme you can encounter & that's borderline intelligent.

At least here we're coming in, hearing from others all over the world, & hanging out talking w/them. It's kinda like being in a coffee house.

Funny how fast we seem to be able to detect & weed out the liars & game players, tho. Everybody here is pretty damned real & we know it's a privelidge (sp?) to be a member, not a right.

There are people that have been members that have gone away & I still think about & miss them very much & hope they return- we're that much of a family here most of the time.

I don't know about the other sites mentioned, as I'm not into going on them, but between this site, Boozer's fishing site & 1 or 2 others, I don't much care about many others- & this is the one I come to daily. The others it's lucky if I get to. (Sorry Bones, mine...) I tend to get somewhat withdrawn most of the time, so spend a lot of time playing games.

Yeah, trek- newbies!!! Ain't it cool?

That's pretty much it in a nutshell - while it may one day replace the forum medium, there's every reason to believe it isn't going to be capable of doing it for a very long time, simply because the people who go to Facebook generally do so primarily for social networking, not discussion, and once there the blog-lite vibe of the site takes over. The plusses are that you can create forums for tiny interests you have and wish to share, but there's very little uptake. I personally only use it for minor forum matters that can't be served elsewhere (and I don't wait around for answers); other than that it's just a tool for playing chess, Go and Scrabulous, and occasionally saving a penny on phonecalls and organizing a visit to the pub with my friends.
