View Full Version : You Used WHAT?
I remember when there was a HUGE deal made over people buying horse shampoo/conditioner for themselves. I used it and it worked wonders. Some years back a super model was interviewed about what she used to keep her skin so nice. She told them kitty litter as an exfoliant. Boy did that raise some brows. It also did wonders for the kitter litter market. :p
What unusual things have you used that were not intended for that use? Details please!
horse Linament Oil for sore muscles etc. Worked 100 times better than icy Hot (Stunk like hell though)
Used EZ-Off Oven Cleaner to strip lacquer off of an Electric Guitar body I re-did. Works so much faster than lacquer thinner does.
When I worked in the tool & Die trade in H.S. we used Super glue to close small cuts. It kept contaminents out of the wound too.
Sometimes I use needle-nose pliers as nail clippers. Grab, twist, tear and yank and you're done! :D

I use newspaper to clean windows and glass to eliminate streaks and lint.
If shoes are stinky, place a dryer sheet in each shoe overnight. If a car gets stinky, same thing, just place under one of the seats.
I use my scrubber thingy that has soap in the handle to wash dishes, to also degrease my stove using the Dawn dish soap inside it with a little hot water.
My mom used to do this, especially this one time when I was little and got swarmed by yellow jackets and had over 75 stings on my lower body. She laid me in a bath with rolled oatmeal for about 5 minutes, then on each sting, she would place a piece of asprin on top of the sting to draw out the poison. That time, when she ran out of asprin, she used cigarette tobacco. If you only have one sting or whatever, just place it on top of the sting and put a bandaid over top of it.
Also, if you have a toothache, I've heard people placing a pain reliever directly onto the tooth that hurts.
Oh, and brown sugar makes a great exfoliant. Just wet your skin with some warm/hot water and scrub.
Also, cornstarch and water make a cool science experiment for kids (and adults) lol--when moving between your hands, it turns into a solid ball but if you keep it still, it acts as a liquid.
I love looking up weird uses for everyday things.

When I work outside in the summer, I stick a dryer sheet under my collar to keep the bugs away from my face. Also works on mosquitoes.

Now that you mention it, I've heard that one before, in the context of putting one on each shoulder strap of a backpack while in the woods. Same reason, though.

well for copper bottom pots -- lemon juice, salt and vinegar will make them look like new--but i still like bar keepers friend better and doens't smell as bad
Okay, these are some GREAT ones!
When I worked at Tabo Bell we used to drop old pennies into the hot sauce packs (when they were like mini cups) and let them sit. You'd take them out and all the grime, etc... was gone. Makes ya think twice before using on your food though!

I'm sure there is an interesting story here .
Coca~Cola is great for eating away at the corrosion on a car battery terminal.

DMSO (an industrial solvent) for pain- works GREAT! It's a byproduct of paper manufacturing & MSM was developed from it- it also binds w/the free radicals in the human body & gets peed out. I've also used it on the edema I have in my right armpit from the lymphandectomy I had done after the breast cancer was discovered & the swelling decreases substantially.
