See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Talk A Lot Of Shit
The board has been fucking wild this weekend. That's okay, if it helps to let off a little steam, and everyone can walk away knowing it's just conversation, then I can't argue. Well, okay... I can argue. But I can listen, too. There's a lot of good people on this board. I enjoy conversing and debating with them all. I started to write an email to Mick, a good guy with his heart in the right place. What started off as a symbolic gesture as an American... ended up as a close to three page, 38 responses international incident... Or something like that. Plus a great second thread by RudeDawg that should have been the end of it. Yeah right. Remember, these guys and gals are all really cool people just letting off some steam. That being said... As I was saying, I started off this email, but it grew into my new update. So Mick, here's what I was sending you:
Hey, I just wanted to thank you for putting up those flags, and the Lady Liberty. It's been such a harsh week. People walking around, disconnected. But that flag. Those 'pieces of cloth'. My heart soars as does my pride. I feel sad for those who don't get that same patriotic stance. If I try to explain it, it comes off as arrogance. But it's not. It's an unspoken "and I wish this feeling for you too".
.
Right now, it's what's holding us together. Each strand is wrapped around an American's finger... as a promise, and as a 'don't forget that I'm here for you'. Our Country isn't perfect. Far from it. But, it is our country just the same. It's ground supports us, holds homes to live in, jobs to go to, stores that offer food and clothing, and sense of security that until September 11, 2001.... we felt safe from foreign attacks. Now that thread is our life line. We are holding onto it with both hands.
When the World Trade Center Collapsed, America fell to it's knees. When the dust and smoke settled, with both hands securely attached, our eyes followed the thread to its source: Our American Flag. Standing around that flag, wiping the dust from their knees, was the rest of the world. That 'thread' was the equivalent of 275,562,673 (July 2000 est.) hands, all pulling together, to help eachother out of that dark, cold hole.
Now, with an ache in our hearts for the men, women and children who lost their lives for no other reason than being on American soil, we stand again united. Not just with fellow Americans, mind you... We stand united with the Countries of the world who take our hand and vow to end this evil that has made so many suffer throughout this Earth. We stand equal to every man and woman who looks at us from another country.
Call it cloth sewn together. Say it is 'Just a flag'. That there's 'nothing symbolic' about it to you. I say, "Fine. You do not live in my Country. I do not expect you to understand. Nor can I MAKE you respect the fact that this is 'an American thing'." That being said, let me make something perfectly clear... I am proud to be an American citizen. I LOVE MY COUNTRY! And this flag, while meaningless to you, is a symbol of that love and pride. Just as Osama Bin Laden tried and failed to destroy that love and pride with the lives of innocent people... Your indifference will not waver my consecration. If this cloth is something that helps a nation heal, why don't you stand the fuck back and let us heal.
