One of the more pleasant things in life,is a good dinner party with convivial company.
I was wondering. If you could invite any amount of people either living OR dead.

Who would you invite and why??
Remember,it can be anyone you wish.

I expect you all to respond, think about it, and list your ideas they can be (actually better ) controversial or loved ones names.

I will respond with my perfect group (around 8 persons) later.

Mmm tough question! Let's see:

Adolf Hitler
Mahatma Gandhi
Enya
John Maynard Keynes
Amadeus Mozart
Vercingetorix
Jodie Foster
Jeanne d'Arc

The hardest thing will be to keep them from fighting at the table, never mind finding a common choice of menu for them :)

I guess since I have a penchant for dictators despots and terrorists I would like to have the company of the cream of the modern crop
I would start with three terrorists
Yassir Arafat
Nelson Mandela
And Bin Laden who only edged out Robert Mugabe in that at the end of the dinner I could turn Bin Laden in for the reward that would pay for the meal. I would invite those three because they are sucesful terrorists two actually won nobel peace prizes.
I would add to that group the following three despots
Idi Amin
Pol Pot
Jorge Rafael Videla
Again three of the best of their kind that were truly dedicated to their craft.
I will top that with three of the strongest dictators of our time
Fidel Castro The strongest and tougest
Marshal Tito another tough bastard
The last spot would be a hard one to decide But if Im ever going to have a first time to hit a woman Id love it to be Imelda Marcos for that reason alone Id save a place at the table for that bitch

Right, in a couple of lines:

Adolf Hitler: for being a master of mass manipulation and pure evilness.
Mahatma Gandhi: for being a symbol of full belief in peace and anti-violence
Enya: for the wonderful music she makes that reaches billions of people even tough she never tours and only has a very low media profile
John Maynard Keynes: for being the architect of the economy model where the government plays a responsible role, contraire to the popular belief nowadays of friedman enthousiasts.
Amadeus Mozart: for being an absolute musical genius, for just -being- music
Vercingetorix: to know what Europe -could- have been like if the Celts hadn't lost the battle at Alesia and the continent hadn't been romanized.
Jodie Foster: for being a top actress, super class and intelligent lady yet never allowed herself to be spoiled by the Hollowood brawl.
Jeanne d'Arc: to be able to talk to someone who believed she was 'touched' by God and therefore willing to sacrifice her own life in battle.

Will that do? :)

They might be interesting historical figures, but would they make good dinner guests? I think not. Here are my picks:

For conversation:

Oscar Wilde
Mark Twain
Stephen Fry
Roger Penrose
Richard Dawkins

Foodies (always have to have foodies):

Nigella Lawson
Nigel Slater
Gordon Ramsey

Sterling's special wildcard picks:

Kate Beckinsale
Eddie Izzard

One small Question mate WHY

SysLord
04-08-02, 11:00PM
simple, 2 words: ethnic cleansing and murder.

aussie
04-09-02, 08:21AM
Explain that one to me please. And if you were hosting my dinner party where would you seat him? I cant see him fitting in any where. Can you convince me he deserves a place?

I have seen little on the news in the last few days other than Israel taking the nessesary steps to secure its borders and protect its citizens. Retaliation is the only thing Ive seen but if Ive missed something important please fill me in. Ethnic cleansing Ive seen no evidence of at all and the only murders Ive noticed have been sand ******s loaded with explosives walking into public places and killing civilians. If this was happening in my country Id dam well be expecting my government to put a stop to it. One attack on america and Afghanistan was torn apart in the failed search for one man. Israel has been under constant attack for years now and because they react your accusing them of ethnic cleansing. This all sounds more than just a little anti Jewish to me. Am I right?

Wow, have you been watching the news over the last few days? He can sit on the loo all evening for all I care.

Mine's simple......I would invite all my friends (break out the babysitters) and get a keg and pounds of crablegs and cold shrimp. Oh, and steaks on the grill for everyone! I don't want strangers coming to my home for dinner and a party.;)

I was starting to wonder how long it would take before you would call me anti-jewish :) Maybe I can call you anti-arabian? I don't know what the aussie news is reporting but fact is that hundreds of palestinians have died in this 'defence' operation over the last few days. And are these all terrorists, don't think so. Last night I saw an interview with an Israeli who lived and survived through the horrible onslaught of the Nazi Holocaust. Bottom line of the interview was that he felt ashamed of what the Israeli were doing in the Palestine territory now. I think someone like that has a bit more authority to speak than me and you don't you think so? If Israel is only really trying to defend themselves, then why do they block passage for rescue workers and ambulance people to get to wounded men, women and children? You tell me where is the sense and humanity in that?

Don't get me wrong, I do not condone the suicide attacks, they are brutal and inhumane as much as any other killing. But don't also forget the reason why this conflict is bloody and violent. Imagine a people that has been suppressed and discriminated for decades now in every single aspect of their life: whether it is religion, work, culture, language, medical care, education, media, politics etc. I don't think anyone of us can imagine the desperation any average palestinian in the occupied territories has suffered in his/her life.

Oh, and what is going to happen after the defense operation has finished?

.....Ive noticed have been sand ******s loaded with explosives.....
Got any interests with the Klan do you?

Im happy you didnt have to wait long mate but your statements so far do point in that general direction. You seem to have a real problem with the defence of someones homeland. Perhaps though if it was Belgium you would see things a little differently.

As for the blocking of passage of rescue workers and ambulances it seems that you need to find your self a better news service. The BBC news just recently showed a whole ambulance full of weapons being ferried to palistinian fighters. Since the red cross and the red cresent are supposed to be sacred and NEVER used to ferry arms and troops I find it utterly apalling that such a trust could be broken. They have even used red cresent ambulances as cover for gunman. This flies directly in the face of all recognised conventions So these rag heads have already shown that they just cant be trusted. After a trust of that kind has been violated once then I feel that is enough.
That is the sense in stopping ambulances. ALL ambulances now must be searched for the safety ofthe Israeli soldiers.

Don't get me wrong, I do not condone the suicide attacks, they are brutal and inhumane as much as any other killing.

Its strange you say this with one breath then carry on to defend these terrorist bastards with the next one. there is no defence for sending a bomb into a crowded restaurant or a bus stop full of inocents. As for me I think they are getting what they asked for. :finger: that one is for arafat (I refuse to capitalise that bastards name he dosnt deserve the respect) :finger: and that one is for the donkey he rode in on

Lastly the use of the word ****** dosnt automaticly make me a member of the klan. other wise Im in good company with Whoopi Goldberg and Richard Pryor and any other black person who has ever used the same word. I take no offence at the word racist feel free to use it when ever you like

Well I think aussie has responded even better than I could of. So thanks.

SysLord, If Arafat really wanted peace, he would have accepted the terms at Camp David, that was offering him back 95% of what they wanted. The ONLY thing Israel cannot accept is the 'Right of Return' into Israel of EVERY refuge.

The Palestinians, do not want Gaza and West Bank. They want the state of Israel. The Israelies did agree to 80000 more but 4 M people in a country of only 5m Jews is IMPOSSIBLE. Lets see Belgium take 80000 of them.

Let me give you some additional facts how Arafat embraces peace

1)The boat load of arms from Iran. Israel found all the documents in Arafats compound, showing HE negotiated them.

2) Millions of forged Shekels were found. Arafat is trying to undermine destroy Israels economy

3)Arms found in Ambulances

4)Suicide bombers.

Israel, is a democratic country, do you really think, they would destroy their economy, just to have a stupid battle with the Palestinians. Israel already gave up 85% of the land, the other 10% was offered.

So you can believe what you like. I have been there, I have talked to the people. Israel WILL defend its country, and I am totally behind that. You wanna go and support the Palestinians, thats fine, but I suggest you go live there, and find out how THEY treat their people. No money or infrastucture happens at all.

I read the complete speach of Bush, the BBC reported tiny bits of it. The truth is Bush knows well, that no government would tolerate suicide bombing every day.

Arafat is a loser. He has betrayed his people, and is a lier in every way.

Well spoken that man. Every nation has a right to live peacfully within its own borders. Dont forget also that the land in question was payed for in Israeli blood during the six day war a war they never started.

GLADIATOR

1948/49 (War of Independance)
ALL Arab nations attack Israel. This spawned the Palestinian refugee crisis.

1967 (6 day war)
Egypt,Syria, and Jordan mobalize against Israel.

197x (Yom Kippur war)
Egypt, and Syria attack Israel, with NO warning on the Holiest of Days (Yom Kippur )

1978 (Camp David 1)
In return for diplomatic recognition, Israel agrees to return Sinai peninsula to Egypt.

2000 (Camp David 2)
Israel returns 85% of West Bank and Gaza to palestinian control. Only outstanding issues are

1)Arabs want 100% control of Jerusalem. Israel states Jerusalem will be an 'open' city to all. Israel maintaing control of @65% and Arabs 35%.
Arabs refuse. They want to bar Israel/Jews from that city, as they did up to 1967.

2)Right of return.
Already mentioned

Finally. Juts for your info.
Palestinian population as of to-day

West Bank = 1.9M
Gaza = 1M
E . Jerusalem = 86,000
Jerusalem Region = 329,000
Total 3.3M

Jewish settlers in W bank or Gaza @ 220,000. Have you seen the size of Jerusalem (415000 Arabs live) compared to West Bank/Gaza (220,000 Jews live).

Above are the truthful facts.

Arafat is a loser.

Obviously I am threading on very sensitive and heated soil for both of you and I respect that. I am neither Jew nor Arab and where the conflict itself is concerned I am total outsider. From that position I speak. You both argue that Isreal must defend its homeland but isn't Israel - possibly not the state, but at least the soil - not also the homeland of the Palestinians? What do you want to do with them? Deport them?

Of course Arafat is an NOT innocent and helpless leader as some choose to portray him. I think where shrewdness is concerned there not that many that can master him - and that is not meant in a complimentary way -, certainly not Sharon. But at least when both Israel and American governors were of progressive mind, Arafat was willing to talk. If Rabbin and Clinton could talk to the man then why can't Sharon and Bush? My answer to that is that Sharon *does not* want to talk period. He wants to solve the Palestinian issue once and forever (ala Sabra and Chatilla?). Caught between the devil and the deep blue see is Bush who needs to woo the Arab world for his next attack on Irak but at the same time he needs to keep his right wing happy by supporting the historical Israeli position.

Let's get back to Arafat for a while. A big difference between Arafat and his US/Israeli opponents is the fact that Arafat's position is much weaker amongst his peers. He has little or no hold over many radical and splinter groups which gain momentum in popularity in worse circumstances. At the same time he needs to keep as many of his own people as possible in the camp of a seeking a non-violence solution. Before the second Intifadah his position was feeble to say the least but the Sharon offensive has forced Palestinians to rally behind him as never before. So Sharon might be scoring on the tactics but where strategy is concerned? Maybe ironic but also very sad.

In the end however, do you think the conflict can be solved with violence (by either parties) only? If Sharon is meaning to get rid of all 'terrorists' once and forever, how long will it last before the next generation stands up to continue fight? And how much more will they be harder, determined and violent? How do you break the spirit of a people that fights for its existence? How many steps is the Israeli government really thinking ahead?

I think Syslord, we must be careful not to bore other people on the forum. I feel you, me aussie, have put our points accross. Actually no more posting will change either our minds.

Let the others decide on whats currently posted, if they want more, let them ask. what you think?

I never said I was bored, I was concerned others may be board. Additionally because I am Jewish , I must be considered biased.

Of course everything you say in your post is valid, you know it, I know it and indeed Bush knows it.

The violence will continue until, the Palestinians STOP terrorism. What ever claims you got on Israel, they are not blowing up innocent persons in resturants.

Besides a big ole cook out with y'all? Let's see...

1. Thomas Edison-I'd like to ask him how he felt about his inventions and what has become of them.

2. Al Capone-The man had balls. He was arrogant and quick tempered. But I'll bet he was a hoot to debate with.

3. Mae West-Need I say more?

4. Neil Armstrong-He did what we dreampt about. I just want to hear how it felt to do something that was the peak of his life. And how it changed him.
