So now Mattel's toy recall & other bans of chinese made products that have been found to have poisons, high levels of lead, & other contaminents is being called protectionist. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070830/ts_nm/china_safety_dc)
FUCK YOU CHINA OFFICIALS! Our government & big corporations do a lot of things I think are fucked up, but this isn't one of them. Protecting us & our children through banning dangerous products/foods is something US citizens not only expect, but demand. For once, human life has more value than money, & I know I'm not the only one that applauds these actions.
One more reason why I'm glad we have the system we have.

ANOTHER recall- by Toys "R" Us- http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070830/ap_on_re_us/toys__r__us_recall
I'd like to point out that the U.S. called the 58 country-wide ban on its beef protectionist as well. And Canada called the U.S. ban on Canadian beef the same. I dont find China's response to the toy bans to be anything but normal. China will likely respond much more quickly and harshly to anyone who is responsible (by way of execution), compared to the western world.

they do have a rather... pointed way of showing their displeasure with those who abuse the system TOO much..
I bought a new optical mouse yesterday. I shit you not, this is the warning sticker on it.
WARNING: This product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. Made in China.

The only lead in that mouse would be in the solder on the circuit board, so don't open it up and suck on the circuit board! :D

The thing is, the days when you can just rack up tariffs on China are long gone - they've got the US over a barrel (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/08/07/bcnchina107a.xml) courtesy of the astonishing trade surplus they enjoy.
Fan, an official at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, went even further today, letting it be known that Beijing had the power to set off a dollar collapse if it choose to do so.
"China has accumulated a large sum of US dollars. Such a big sum, of which a considerable portion is in US treasury bonds, contributes a great deal to maintaining the position of the dollar as a reserve currency. Russia, Switzerland, and several other countries have reduced the their dollar holdings.
"China is unlikely to follow suit as long as the yuan's exchange rate is stable against the dollar. The Chinese central bank will be forced to sell dollars once the yuan appreciated dramatically, which might lead to a mass depreciation of the dollar," he told China Daily.
Everything has that thing about the lead, even up here in Canada. The funniest part is that it is worded the exact same way... State of California and everything... In Canada...
The lead in the thing i bought turns out to be in the insulation of the cable, something to do with contributing to the softness, and not the solder on the boards.
This recall is just stuipd. The last I checked lead was what made pencils work.

Then the last you checked was ages ago! As far as I know "lead" pencils have been using graphite for ages.
It'd not my fault I'm ancient and still using pencils I've had like forever.
This might explain my stupidity.
I like using pencils too.
