View Full Version : The GPS Blues

I want a GPS device. After riding around with Kittyroze and her magical talking phone I started looking for my own. Instead of fussing at JakeD to look for the Thomas Guide I could be asking him to look at our GPS device... and fussing at him about a million other things. *grins* So far I've been told of two brands: Cobra and TomTom. Both are around $300 - $400. Not too bad, but out of my current financial reach. This is definitely going on my wish list of things to buy for two reasons: It saves time and money by having directions AND business listings in one place... and it pronounces "Cahuenga" as "Cow Wang". *snickers*

The nice thing is, this thing tells you how many miles until your next move - and tells you when to take a turn. You don't have to divert your eyes from the road to get directions. It also recalculates your route if you go the wrong way.

For someone who gets lost as easily as I do, it's a fabulous thing. Besides, it was an included feature on my cellphone. Heck, it got Caufield and I out of Compton alive when we accidentally ended up there.

READ A MAP BEFORE LEAVING.

Really, I get lost easily too, but this is just more overcomplicated bullshit. Read a map, remember where you're going, and pay attention. Gadgets are not always the answer.

It's the difference between walking and driving. Either way, you'll get to where you're going. Driving is just easier and faster.

I have Garmin's nRoute software on my laptop. Kind of clunky to use but I use it maybe only a handful of times a year. I used it on an airplane once, pretty cool to get the elevation and speed info on my own. Probably much cheaper than a stand-alone GPS system.

*THWACK*

No reason to get so pissy. Jeesh.

First of all, when driving in Los Angeles traffic can get bad very quickly. Most of the time I end up searching out alternative routes. Plus, yes I tend to get a tad confused when driving. It's easier to have the directions in front of me... which is okay by map. The only problem is when you want to drive outside of the map areas. That means finding a place with a map and then ending up with a stack of them. It would be easier to just have a GPS system that updates when new freeways are built, etc...

Secondly when we drive it's nice to be able to search out places to eat, etc... in case we get hungry. Yes it can be done beforehand, but then that means we can't choose between places to go and change any plans.

I like to just get in the car and go. It's fun to plan a daytrip at the last minute and not have to stand in line at the AAA to map it out. The GPS is for convenience...

Thank you sweets! I'll be checking them out when I get home. Do you have one?

I would LOVE to have a new Laptop, which is why I am also hesitant on getting this. The one we have is next to dead and a new one (along with a wireless account for surfing) seems way out of our budget for a while.

Lots of people in the UK have these SATNAV's, bloody waste of time unless you are a long distance driver or like myself a motorcycle courier. I don't own one because I don't go outside London that often. Personally I have a map on PDA of London which saves me loads of time.

I think Satnavs are the latest fashion item like Ipods, every car driver seems to have one which will explain the rate of car break ins.
