I love that series (and also the novels). Looking back on it, John Hurt was every bit as scary and ridiculous (always a hard combination to pull off) as Caligula as Joe Pesci is in Goodfellas.

I, Claudius - based on the novels by Robert Graves. It portrays the Roman court from the point of view of Claudius through the empires of Octavian, Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius (the old chap with the stammer in that clip) himself...Nero makes an entrance near the end, too. Great stuff - it's basically all about how one self-effacing, unobtrusive man becomes Emperor by virtue of being the last man standing while more ambitious and boastful climbers die in droves to assassinations, wars, palace coups and poisoning: literally everyone else in the imperial family is dead.
