Kolkata, Mar 19 (IANS) Surgeons have successfully operated upon a man with a partially developed uterus and an ovary at a private hospital in West Bengal's Malda town.
Sahin Alam, 22, a resident of Kaliachak in Malda district, about 250 km north of here, had little idea that the occasional pain in his abdomen would turn out to be a medical wonder and make him the subject of much curiosity.
After living with the abdomen pain for some time, Alam eventually paid a visit to a doctor last week. The doctor at first diagnosed his ailment as a case of appendicitis. But when the pain refused to subside despite medication, the patient was advised to undergo several clinical tests.
The results of the tests surprised doctor Manabesh Pramanik.
"One side of the uterus had burst and a lot of pus had accumulated in that region. Unlike a fully developed uterus in a female body, Alam's uterus did not have any opening," Pramanik was quoted as saying by local reports.
Meanwhile, the news of Alam's abnormality had reached people who made a beeline for his residence to see the "special woman man."
Alam's family members said they had taken his abdomen pain to be due to overeating, but were shocked to learn of the rare medical phenomenon.
Pramanik led a team of surgeons Sunday in a four-hour-long operation to remove Alam's invalid organs at a private nursing home in Malda town. The doctors also found that Alam's testicles were not in his scrotum.
Pramanik is planning another operation to locate the testicles and correct the problem after Alam recovers from the present surgery.
